In 2025, TV viewers can look forward to the return of “Law & Order: SVU” on their schedules. The series will start off in winter, following up from the traumatic fall finale hostage situation that affected Carisi significantly. Although it’s renowned as one of television’s most successful modern procedurals, SVU will delve into that storyline to kick off 2025. Actor Peter Scanavino recently spoke with TopMob about how Carisi is coping – or perhaps not coping – with the events he experienced, and after rewatching the fall finale in preparation for the interview and winter premiere, I can certainly understand where the actor is coming from.
Luckily, you can easily catch up on older SVU episodes with a Peacock subscription. However, that’s almost the only good thing about the Season 26 fall finale from last November. I felt instantly, upon watching it last year, that it was not only one of the best episodes of the season but also one of Scanavino’s finest performances on SVU, out of over 200.
The sensation remained unaltered upon my second viewing of the episode titled “Cornered,” yet the sudden shift from a straightforward hostage situation in Law & Order to one of the hostages being subjected to assault, with Carisi powerless to intervene… this time it carried an added impact, which speaks volumes given its initial intensity! It’s no surprise that Carisi was left disheveled by the episode’s end. During our conversation with Peter Scanavino, he discussed the time leap ahead to the winter premiere on January 16th.
It’s been a few weeks since then, given that he’s resumed his work routine again. I find it hard to believe he would return so quickly following the incident at the deli, but here we are. He seems to be going through the motions, struggling with a sort of numbness or detachment from life, if you will. That appears to be his current predicament. Despite the changes, he still has all the responsibilities he had before, and it’s interesting to see how he manages this transition.
In the opening episode of winter, titled “First Light,” we see Carisi’s struggle to find closure after his ordeals, complicated by the revelation that one of those responsible has altered his plea. A sneak peek suggests he’s finding it tough to cope, while Rollins and Benson are collaborating to monitor him closely. Kelli Giddish graces our screens again in this episode as a guest star for the second time in Season 26.
Clearly, Carisi isn’t pursuing a case against the man from the hostage situation, as it is Nick Baxter, the new District Attorney on “Law & Order”, who is mentioned in the clip. In fact, as stated by Peter Scanavino, his character hasn’t been handling any cases during the time jump, as suggested in the preview.
He’s resumed his role as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in this new episode. Since his last case, it seems he hasn’t taken on another one, making this his initial significant case since returning to work. Prior to this, he had been at work but not fully immersed in the ADA position like before, and now he is back in action with a fresh case.
Kelli Giddish appearing in “First Light” could indicate that Carisi is receiving the assistance he requires, although as an ADA, he may not easily find it. However, the end of the fall finale hinted that Carisi’s recovery path wouldn’t be an easy one. Later, Peter Scanavino revealed the reactions of people close to Carisi regarding his progress rate, stating:
It seems everyone is quite understanding, yet patience is crucial here, too. However, his profession demands a certain level of commitment, which affects not just him, but others as well. If he’s struggling, it impacts others negatively. So, while compassion is needed for his situation, there’s also a need for some firmness in communication, perhaps delivering tough truths that he needs to hear from those close to him.
In our last encounter in 2024, Carisi seemed unprepared for “tough love”; could it be that very thing he requires to revert back to his usual self as we step into 2025? Time will tell, but fans can anticipate a stellar performance from Scanavino during the winter premiere, airing on NBC on Thursday, January 16 at 9 p.m. ET.
During the 2024-2025 TV schedule, episodes of SVU will air in between Law & Order, featuring a potentially game-changing plot point for one character, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. At 10 p.m. ET, Found Season 2 will premiere, with a Station 19 alum joining the cast. Regarding Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5, we’re still eagerly anticipating its debut as a Peacock Original, starring Christopher Meloni.
