As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of Hollywood simulations, I can say that the dynamic between Rob Lowe and his son John Owen is a fascinating study. It’s not every day you see such a respectful and understanding father-son duo in real life, let alone in the silver screen.
In a fortunate few cases, Hollywood can be seen as a family enterprise, but this privilege sometimes stirs up debates when well-known parents are accused of nepotism due to casting their children in roles. Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen, have had numerous collaborations throughout their careers. However, Lowe is comfortable working with his gifted child, but he would not consider casting him in a biopic about his life. Meanwhile, John Owen has some opinions regarding his father’s casting decision.
In June, Entertainment Tonight interviewed a father-son pair, and when the son, aged 29, asked who would play the older Lowe if Hollywood planned to release a biopic about his life in 2025, Lowe swiftly suggested Zac Efron. He also admired Efron’s performance in A24’s “The Iron Claw.”
In a different scenario, another child star might have been disappointed if their father had given a role to someone else instead of keeping it within the family. However, Owen gracefully accepted the hypothetical casting decision made by his father. This topic resurfaced in a recent interview with the Unstable co-stars by watchmojo. On this occasion, the interviewer decided to pose the question directly to the actor/writer, asking why Lowe didn’t consider himself for the biopic role.
I believe it’s clear that neither of us has considered me as a potential candidate for that issue, given our mutual understanding and respect for each other. In simpler terms, it might be too personal or related to my own circumstances.
As a devoted fan, I can understand why Lowe and Owen might prefer to steer clear of a hypothetical biopic about the life of the 9-1-1: Lone Star lead. Firstly, it could rekindle the thorny issue of nepotism once more. Secondly, actors in biopics frequently face an onslaught of criticism for their portrayals of cherished figures. In a way to shield his son from similar harsh reactions, maybe Lowe decided to fictitiously cast Zac Efron instead.
Confidently handling the situation, Owen playfully commented on the casting choice by joking that if Zac Efron joined the show, it would be his father who stood to gain more benefits rather than the other way round.
As a devoted admirer, I firmly believe that Zac Efron would excel in the role. It’s not just wishful thinking; I truly feel that he would be deeply respected for taking on this challenge. However, to embody the character of Rob, I suspect Zac might need to tone down his muscular physique significantly. Yet, with his acting talent and dedication, I have no doubt he would deliver a commendable performance.
Even though Efron has the talent to take on another biopic role, it seems unlikely he’ll be offered this specific project since, as far as we’re aware, a new Lowe film isn’t being developed at the moment. Unfortunately, this means that his phone probably won’t be ringing for this job opportunity. However, fans can still look forward to seeing Efron on screen by catching up with him in “9-1-1: Lone Star” when it airs again on TV schedules in September 2024 for its fifth and potentially last season.
Viewers might want to watch Lowe and Owen portraying a humorous father-son pair in the streaming series titled “Unstable“. The initial season is accessible for streaming via Netflix subscription, and we can anticipate the arrival of the second season soon.
