After slamming cinema intellectuals for praising AIWAL over Homebound, Karan Johar has change of heart towards Payal Kapadia, find out why

Lately, filmmaker Karan Johar has voiced criticism towards certain self-proclaimed cinema experts who have lavished praise on Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light while seemingly overlooking his own projects. He noted that his production house consistently takes risks in pushing creative limits, yet is often subjected to mockery for films like Nadaaniyan. However, at the Cannes 2025 premiere of Homebound, it appears there’s been a shift in perspective as Karan now seems keen on reaching out to Kapadia and even mentioned wanting to spend time with her socially.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan Johar expressed his eagerness to meet Payal Kapadia at Cannes 2025. He shared that he’s eager to meet someone he hasn’t met yet, specifically Payal Kapadia. He wishes for someone to help make this encounter possible because he wants to express how amazing she looks and how proud he is of her achievements. As a jury member this year, Payal made a significant impact in a short time, creating waves a filmmaker would aspire to create. Seeing her at the event fills him with excitement, and he’s looking forward to spending time with Payal Kapadia.

For those who might not be aware, during an interview with Galatta Plus, Johar expressed that he tends to receive more criticism rather than praise for creating humorous content like “Nadaaniyan”, compared to the recognition he gets for supporting serious films such as “Homebound”.

He acknowledged that the criticism has an impact on him, and he feels it originates from people viewing him as overly extravagant or not fitting the typical image of a serious movie director.

As a devoted supporter, I’ve found myself voicing my discontent regarding the underappreciated risks taken by Karan’s production house. It seems that when Dharma Productions delves into intricate or socially significant topics, these efforts often go overlooked.

He commented, “Instead of focusing on the work itself, people often zero in on ‘Nadaaniyan’ and scrutinize it relentlessly while associating it with me as ‘Karan Johar’s Nadaaniyan.’ This is all that seems to be discussed about it.

He praised All We Imagine As Light and its director, Payal Kapadia, whose work left a lasting impression at Cannes the year before. Yet, he highlighted an inconsistency: while some film critics quickly praise movies like Kapadia’s, they often overlook the fact that even a production company such as Dharma had a film chosen for the prestigious festival.
