After THAT Death In Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12, I Need To Talk About Why It’s The Saddest One Yet

As a gamer who grew up on a digital farm in the wild west of video games, I can tell you that the death of Colby in Yellowstone hit me harder than any in-game character I’ve ever lost. I’ve seen my fair share of pixelated demises, but nothing prepared me for this tragic turn of events.

prepare yourself for some significant reveals concerning Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12, as major spoilers lie ahead! If you haven’t kept up, you can catch the show every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network within its 2024 TV schedule.

As a devoted gamer of Yellowstone, I’ve become all too familiar with the grim specter of death that pervades the series, especially in these climactic episodes. The revelation of John Dutton’s assassination and Sarah Atwood’s brutal shooting have left an indelible mark on the season, but nothing quite compares to the heart-wrenching demise of a cherished secondary character in Episode 12. In my opinion, this has been the most sorrowful death the show has delivered so far this season.

How Colby Died On Yellowstone

From the very start of “Yellowstone,” Denim Richards has portrayed the iconic character Colby the ranchhand. Through the progression of seasons, Colby and his fellow bunkhouse residents have endeared themselves to viewers. Consequently, witnessing one of these endearing figures meet an untimely demise is truly heart-wrenching.

In the case of Colby, it’s extra tragic though.

The character (Finn Little) tried to help Carter by calming a wild horse in the barn. Meanwhile, Colby attempted to divert the horse’s attention so the younger ranchhand could escape. Unfortunately, before Finn could get back, the horse kicked and instantly killed the other character (Richards).

During the episode, we witnessed various responses from the ranch hands, such as those of Colby’s girlfriend Teeter, as well as his close friend Ryan, upon hearing the news.

As a dedicated Yellowstone fan, I found the quiet demise of that character particularly heartbreaking – and surprisingly so, given its simplicity compared to other deaths in the series. Here’s what made it hit me hard:

Why Colby’s Death Is The Saddest One From Season 5 So Far

John Dutton’s demise was undeniably one of the most significant in the series. However, given that Kevin Costner had departed from the show, I found it somewhat predictable as his character’s passing seemed like a logical progression to allow his children to grapple with the inheritance and the land’s future. Conversely, Sarah’s death came as an unexpected shock, as she was portrayed as a complex character. Furthermore, both these deaths were intertwined with the major violent storyline this season revolving around Market Equities and the power struggle over the airport.

How To Watch Yellowstone

You can stream the first four and a half seasons of Yellowstone with a Peacock subscription.

Colby’s demise seemed exceptionally heartbreaking compared to the other incidents, as it was sudden, unintentional, and completely disconnected from any significant perilous scheme.

One clear aspect that Taylor Sheridan emphasizes in the series Yellowstone is portraying the inherently hazardous character of ranching. It’s not uncommon for accidents to lead to fatalities, and these types of sudden, unexpected losses can be particularly challenging to cope with. In an instant, they can disappear from our lives.

Raised on a farm myself, I’ve personally experienced the perils of farmwork. It’s all too common for accidents to occur, which made Colby’s sudden demise in such a brief, seemingly uneventful sequence particularly distressing. To add salt to the wound, young Carter, who happened to be present, felt responsible for it, making that scene incredibly poignant and heartrending.

Furthermore, the bunkhouse crew is deeply cherished characters within the Yellowstone series. They consistently dedicate themselves to the ranch and demonstrate unwavering allegiance through their labor. The pain of witnessing one being removed, even when it was an act of assistance, is palpable.

Apart from everything else, we were also left watching the responses of Teeter and Ryan upon hearing the news. Indeed, Beth’s emotional breakdown in Rip’s arms over John was quite moving. But equally distressing was observing Colby’s girlfriend and closest friend discover that he had departed without the chance to bid him farewell.

In summary, this death amplifies the perilous nature of the current season in Yellowstone and underscores that danger isn’t only from the ranch’s adversaries; the work itself can be equally hazardous. Consequently, I find myself anxious to witness how these characters cope with these threats as the remaining episodes unfold.
