As a long-time Critical Role fan and avid gamer, I can confidently say that the third season of The Legend of Vox Machina has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From heartbreaking moments to hilarious surprises, this season has managed to keep me on the edge of my seat week after week.
Spoilers ahead for the first nine episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3.
Fans of Critical Role are eagerly anticipating the conclusion of season 3 of “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Amazon Prime Video’s 2024 TV schedule. With the climax approaching, tensions run high as Vox Machina faces unprecedented challenges following their betrayal by Raishan after defeating Thordak. The sweetness of that victory was marred by Percy’s untimely demise, and the ensuing battle against the Cinder King has claimed even more lives. Consequently, recent episodes have been heart-wrenching spectacles.
It was one minor moment from Episode 8 that actually hit me the hardest, to my own surprise. As I thought back on just how sad it was while the days count down toward the finale, I decided to revisit something much funnier: what Matt Mercer told me during the Legend of Vox Machina junket about my favorite of the show’s running gags.
Alas, let’s start with the minor moment that was very well done but hit me hardest.
Vex Mourning Percy… With A Certain Arrowhead
In Episode 7’s events, the foreshadowing, tone, and one-sided love declaration from Percy made his death less shocking, as I had expected casualties in the battle against Thordak. Even Kash’s demise didn’t catch me off guard. The plot twists were skillfully executed, but they weren’t entirely unexpected. Despite Laura Bailey’s moving performance, it was a small, seemingly insignificant moment that truly tugged at my heartstrings.
As I watched Vex cling to the arrowhead Percy crafted for her in Season 2, tears streaming down her face beside Percy’s tomb, a wave of unexpected emotions swept over me. It’s still unclear if this was Chekhov’s arrowhead being referenced; however, one thing is certain – I certainly didn’t anticipate the nod to Season 2 in this moment.
The arrowhead’s design was subtly done that no character in the story pointed it out, making it impressive how the show managed to evoke strong feelings with what seemed like an Easter egg. I can’t be alone in being moved by this detail! We’ve progressed quite a bit from explicit scenes now.
Matt Mercer On Vox Machina’s Best Running Gag
Given the last three episodes have been quite emotional, it might be beneficial to focus on something more uplifting before the final episode, as there’s still much unresolved and potentially heartrending moments ahead. During my interview with the Critical Role cast regarding Season 3, I took the chance to inquire from Matt Mercer about a recurring joke in The Legend of Vox Machina, specifically not the doors, but the secret Matts.
In his role as Dungeons & Dragons game’s DM that inspired “LOVM”, Matt Mercer hasn’t stuck to one main character’s voice throughout the storyline but has instead provided voices for characters such as Sylas Briarwood, Orthax, Umbrasyl, and even the spice dealer who attempted to sell drugs to Scanlan. The animators have included subtle appearances of Mercer in the series since the very first episode, right up until Season 3.
I inquired whether Mercer is informed beforehand about his planned animated appearance on the series, to which he responded:
It’s a surprise when I see it. It’s for the art design meetings when they’re kind of checking in all the various resources and upcoming designs for approval or notes, and they’ll just throw up the next slide for this one little character, or this one little moment, and it’s my face again. I genuinely don’t know how many of them are just the artists having fun with me, and how many are Sam [Riegel] and Travis [Willingham] on the side being like, ‘Make this one Matt just to mess with them.’ Either way, it’s always a fun and embarrassing moment that I relinquish, because I think it’s also a fun little nod to where this all came from.
Indeed, Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham collaborated on writing the Season 3 opener alongside “the spice guy.” One of the pre-season clips made available showcases that specific scene. If you’d like to revisit memories (or simply indulge in Matt Mercer as the spice merchant once more), feel free to check it out:
Matt Mercer isn’t the sole cast member who enjoyed discussing the amusement of embedding cameos within the animation. During my conversation with Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, and Travis Willingham about their journey to hell, we also touched upon a brief scene in the Season 3 trailer featuring a character resembling Matt Mercer being swallowed by parasites. The voice actors shared their thoughts on this:
- Liam O’Brien: “It’s so sad to see that Matthew Mercer is there for some reason [in hell].”
- Travis Willingham: “You can find him almost anywhere. He’s had an unfortunate experience there.”
- Ashley Johnson: “Oh yeah, you can find him anywhere.”
Will the series The Legend of Vox Machina feature any additional appearances by Matt Mercer prior to the end of Season 3? It’s hard to say at this point since there is still much left for the heroes to achieve in only three remaining episodes. Given that Raishan dominated most of the first nine episodes, except for Keyleth, it seems unlikely they will defeat her as swiftly as Vorugal!
As a devoted fan of The Legend of Vox Machina, I can’t help but ponder: Could it be that Percy’s tale has reached its conclusion? Vex’s reappearance in Season 2 left me hooked, and her resurrection was a testament to the fact that death isn’t always permanent in this universe. Yet, when Vax struck the deal to bring Vex back, she was still cold. Percy’s been gone for quite some time now, so is his story truly over? Was Vex’s arrowhead merely an Easter egg, serving no further purpose in the narrative?

The previous two seasons ended with intriguing cliffhangers, so fans are eager to see how Critical Role concludes this chapter of their story. At the moment, it is undecided whether or not “Vox Machina” will come back for Season 4 on Amazon Prime Video.
