As a dedicated fan of Tracker, I’ve been eagerly waiting for its return to primetime, and boy, was the Season 2 premiere a rollercoaster ride! The writers certainly didn’t disappoint with their twisty plotlines and unexpected character developments.
Spoilers are ahead for the Season 2 premiere of Tracker on CBS, called “Out of the Past.”
The character Tracker is set to return on primetime TV schedules for 2024, picking up where Colter Shaw left off after an unexpected revelation in the Season 1 finale. The initial case of the new season begins seemingly routine with a family disappearing from their car, but takes unexpected turns and twists, with more surprises thrown in for good measure, finally unveiling a tale of crime and witness protection. A major curiosity ahead of time was concerning the whereabouts of a character who would be absent in future episodes, and actress Fiona Rene, who plays Reenie, recently shared insights about the new partnership that’s developing as a result.
How Tracker Wrote Out A Series Regular
Prior to the highly anticipated premiere week of CBS, it was announced beforehand that Robin Weigert wouldn’t be back as a main character in the show, despite Season 1 concluding with Teddi being an integral part of Colter’s team alongside her wife Velma (Abby McEnany). With McEnany staying on the series, the question became: how would the writers handle Teddi’s departure while ensuring Velma remains involved?
The answer really comes in two parts, with the first being Velma’s explanation for why Teddi was absent in the first episode of the fall as well as why she wasn’t going back and forth with her wife. Speaking to Colter, Velma exposited:
She will stay for an extended period because she is assisting her mother in organizing their things. It was inconvenient for me to be there, so I left.
Indeed, there wasn’t much information about what Teddi is assisting her mom with or the reason for the apparent length of time it has taken, but the show is already stirring up marital tension that could lead to a separation in order to keep Abby McEnany portraying Velma. The series found an alternative method to facilitate this in the premiere, by introducing a new partnership with none other than Reenie, which forms part of the answer.
Fiona Rene asked Velma to assist in establishing her new criminal law office, having found success together in “Out of the Past.” This way, they could work side by side in person rather than communicating only through calls, opening up possibilities for more personal interactions. Now, let’s see where this partnership takes them next!
What Fiona Rene Told TopMob About Reenie And Velma
Prior to the launch of the second season of “Tracker,” I had a chat with Fiona Rene, who shared insights about her role as Reenie. From discussing the wildest moments acting alongside Justin Hartley to revealing details about Reenie’s upcoming partnership with Velma in Season 2, here are some highlights from our conversation.
By no means together, but rather separately! I believe our off-camera bond forged through friendship will translate exceptionally well on screen. Abby McEnany is simply extraordinary and a one-of-a-kind talent. I feel incredibly fortunate to share the set with her. It’s quite fascinating. I think that their paths cross at a shared juncture. Reenie embarks on her own for the first time, launching her own business, which demands an immense amount of effort.
In Season 1, Reenie showed she was excellent at extricating Colter from tricky legal predicaments. However, establishing her own law firm presents a unique set of hurdles. Rene pointed out some of the pressures involved in setting up an LLC under your personal name, such as paperwork and filings required with city and county offices. Given all these responsibilities, teaming up with Velma could prove beneficial. The actress explained further:
It seems that Reenie and Velma are both overwhelmed with their individual tasks. However, as the story unfolds, their ability to lean on each other and foster a strong friendship – one that is personal and professional in nature – becomes crucial. This bond could serve as a solid foundation for the rest of the season, making it an ideal scenario I’m eager to see play out.
If there was any doubt that Tracker might find it challenging to create stories for Velma without her regular co-star or Reenie being outside her comfort zone from Season 1, the alliance between Reenie and Velma presents an intriguing development following the premiere. In response to whether working with Abby McEnany in person is a notable change after Reenie primarily interacted with the team over the phone during most of Season 1, Fiona Rene expressed:
I’m thrilled to have collaborated with Justin on numerous episodes last season, and it looks like we’ll be doing so again this season. However, our dynamic is more like that of colleagues – Bobby, Velma, and Reenie – who are all part of a larger team, supporting the tracker and forming a sort of family unit. I believe our interactions added depth to the show. It wasn’t just my partnership with Velma, but also my bond with Bobby, and Velma’s relationship with Bobby as well as ours collectively, which you’ll get a glimpse of as the season progresses.
It’s fortunate that this time, Tracker will be able to air an entire season, as the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike in late 2023 caused many shows to broadcast only a few episodes during spring due to disruptions. In Season 2, “Out of the Past” introduces Floriana Lima as a woman from Colter’s past, who has connections to an unsolved mystery he couldn’t fully crack.
The future is uncertain regarding when Lima might bring back its remains, but fans don’t have to wait too long for Jensen Ackles’ return as Russell Shaw. He’s set to reappear in the second episode of Season 2, and a sneak peek below suggests there will be plenty of mischief ahead:
Don’t forget to tune into CBS every Sunday evening for the latest installments of “Tracker”. In case you’ve fallen behind or simply prefer streaming, the complete series is available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription right now.
