As a lifelong fan of all things magical and a connoisseur of exceptional makeup artistry, I must say that Marvel’s Agatha All Along has truly captured my heart (and eyes) with their innovative take on the Wicked Witch of the West in Episode 7. The meticulous work put into this transformation by Cindy Welles and Vasilios Tanis, who led the hair and makeup teams respectively, is nothing short of breathtaking.
Among the quirkier shows slated for 2024 television lineup, Marvel’s “Agatha All Along” didn’t hold back on its campy elements, particularly in Episode 7. In this episode, some main characters donned costumes reminiscent of famous figures, and Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness was portrayed as the Wicked Witch of the West. Upon my initial viewing, I found the appearance captivating. However, after discussing it with the head of the makeup team for the show, on behalf of TopMob, I’m even more astounded by the seamless execution of the entire concept.
In a thrilling chat, I got to sit down with Cindy Welles from Agatha’s team who handled the hair, and Vasilios Tanis, their mastermind behind the makeup. During our discussion, my curiosity got the better of me, and I just had to know how they breathed new life into the Wicked Witch of the West’s timeless look for “Death’s Hand in Mine.” Tanis, who’s worked on blockbusters like “WandaVision” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” spilled the beans about the process. He shared that a duo was responsible for applying that makeup, and they added unique touches to modernize the appearance.
The makeup application for this character required two people: myself and Addison Foreman, responsible for special effects. He applied silicone appliances to achieve the desired look. I wanted the character to embody a blend of Agatha and the Wicked Witch of the West, so we decided on a purple color palette, which is symbolic of Agatha’s signature hue. To differentiate this character from the traditional green depiction of the Wicked Witch, I opted for a unique color scheme, ensuring her skin was green but also making it possible to distinguish her features. The costume further emphasizes her role as the Wicked Witch of the West effectively.

It’s interesting to note that many people, including myself, have likely watched ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and other Oz-themed movies throughout the years. In these productions, the famous witch is often depicted in black clothing and with a completely green face. I think it was quite clever when Vasilios Tanis and his team decided to incorporate Agatha’s purple themes into their portrayal of the wicked witch. This choice wasn’t just about staying faithful to her character, but also about offering a new perspective on the classic villain. It might seem like an obvious decision in theory, but it can be challenging when some makeup artists may feel compelled to pay tribute to past interpretations, sometimes excessively so.
In most depictions of Oz’s infamous witch, she is often made to appear quite grotesque. Contrastingly, the artist behind “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” aimed to introduce an element of striking “beauty” into his portrayal. He further clarified that this approach aligns with the established characteristics of Agatha Harkness, a fact he also shared with me.
In addition, I desired an element of beauty and a touch of vanity to be present. Given the grandeur of her character, it was evident in her portrayal within that particular episode. You understand, she was an incredibly large character, which led to everything being more animated and exaggerated. Her chin, nose, and skin tone were all exaggerated. Therefore, I felt a beauty aspect should be incorporated. Consequently, I opted for a more dramatic style, adding her signature color of purple to the green, creating a blend of pinks that seemed fitting with a hint of a ghoulish palette to reflect Agatha’s zaniness and grandeur in that specific episode.
frankly, I’m drained even contemplating the meticulous labor required for this project; and though it might not be the main point, it’s fascinating that the introduction of this new interpretation of the famous Oz character aligns with the launch of the Wicked adaptation. It’s commendable that Vasilios Tanis, from the start, aimed to make Harkness’ witch distinct.
I aimed for it to be noticeable, not just another copycat of the Wicked Witch of the West from popular culture. Instead, I desired a unique, striking interpretation of the role.
In episode 7, we witnessed the return of characters like Maleficent, Glinda the Good Witch, and a wicked version of the Evil Queen, making it an incredibly engaging watch. However, it was equally heart-wrenching as Patti LuPone’s character, Lilia Calderu, met a tragic end. Despite this somber note, the producers managed to infuse some brightness into the storyline. I believe that the exceptional work done on hair and makeup is something worth highlighting. Let’s hope future productions learn from this and create equally impressive portrayals of characters like the Wicked Witch of the West.
