Ahead of the Game – Dungeons & Eldritch is a love letter to Lovecraftian horrors in the deep blue sea

  • Hack-and-slash action against ultra-cool monsters
  • Gear up to look hella cool while doing it
  • Now in Season 0

Greetings and welcome to Ahead of the Game! Here, we offer exclusive previews of upcoming video games, giving you the unique opportunity to try them out before they officially launch. Whether it’s through early access, beta testing, demos, or other means, our series allows you to get a head start on some exciting new titles.

In most games, the title doesn’t fully convey the gameplay experience, but Dungeons & Eldritch truly delivers on its promise. As the name suggests, it centers around the eldritch creatures lurking within dungeons and the epic loot you can collect from every Lovecraftian monster you vanquish.

Instead, it could be rephrased as: It’s not necessarily a negative thing – after a lengthy and exhausting day, you might find solace in letting off steam by slashing at demonic enemies with your powerful axe or revered sword, serving as a form of relaxation.

In this game, you have the opportunity to enhance your character’s appearance with carefully crafted cosmetics, and each piece of armor you equip allows you to strut and show off as you explore deep dungeons in search of more mythical creatures to defeat.

The monsters are astonishingly terrifying, capable of inducing the dread of eternal torment. When you first encounter a horde within a dungeon, it can be an overpowering experience, but fortunately, you’re equipped with your own indomitable arsenal – offering customizable options and exciting skill progressions – to dispatch them effortlessly.

This arrangement seems quite favorable, as it allows you to automate your skills, meaning you only need to steer through the dungeons using your reliable virtual directional pad. This eliminates the constant pressing of skill buttons whenever a colossal boss emerges.

So, how do you play Dungeons & Eldritch?

At the moment, Dungeons & Eldritch is currently running its Season 0 ala-early access phase, and you can only unlock one character class for now. There isn’t much to do in your home base of Atlantis either, but already the loop feels compelling enough to want to go through over and over again.

Fundamentally, you venture into the underground labyrinth, advance in levels, and continue this cycle. Along the way, you gather gold to acquire additional equipment that aids in surviving each subsequent dungeon without injury. Currently, the dialogue for the scenes is absent, but the storyline about Poseidon and the approaching underwater shadows is captivating enough to pique my curiosity – which is notable given my aversion to the abyss of the ocean.

If you don’t have a fear of water like myself and are curious to find out what the excitement is, feel free to visit their official site for more information!
