As a long-time gamer and animation enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of technological advancements in the world of entertainment. However, the recent AI-manipulated “Toy Story” trailer that surfaced online left me feeling a tad uneasy. The nostalgic charm of Woody, Buzz, and the gang being morphed into unrecognizable versions of themselves was disheartening to say the least.

Buzz Lightyear was eager to explore infinite possibilities, but a recent AI-generated video on YouTube by @MultiverseWizard suggests that “Toy Story” should avoid certain areas. In this video, Mr. Potato Head from “Toy Story,” who is usually advertised as a toy, appears in an unsettling and inconsistent way. Similar to other videos of this kind, it leaves a creepy feeling.

Using a modern and fluid narrative style: In the trailer, an eclectic mix of brass music and nostalgic voice-over sets the tone. None of the characters retain their original appearances. The trailer bears a resemblance to how “Toy Story” might look after being filtered through an influence. Characters like Woody (resembling Taylor Sheridan), Buzz, and their companions undergo frequent transformations, adopting completely new looks that deviate from their classic versions. This shift could be disappointing for some, but Pixar has previously utilized this technology in “Elemental,” with fewer negative consequences than expected.

As a big fan of animated films, I find it fascinating how “Elemental” pushed Pixar’s boundaries despite already relying heavily on computer-generated imagery. The irony deepens when you consider this movie was their most technically challenging project yet. To tackle these difficulties, Pixar turned to artificial intelligence (AI) for help in bringing fire to life within this fantastical realm.

Kanyuk shared that most of us didn’t delve into machine learning until its popularity surged recently, so we’ve essentially learned as we went along. Jeremie Talbot, who served as co-character supervisor on the project, disclosed that applying a style transfer to naturalistic fire enables one to manipulate its style and infuse an artist’s touch into something previously untouchable. Peter Sohn, the director, discussed the shift in methods, stating that it represents a fusion of logical and creative thinking, utilizing technology as a means to convey emotions, allowing us to forge connections rather than feeling detached by it. Remarkably, we may be capable of advancing beyond our current limitations.
