The competition among AI companies in Hollywood is heating up, with Luma AI – known for its innovative video generation technology – announcing it’s establishing a base in Los Angeles.
A Northern California-based firm is launching “Dream Lab LA,” a creative studio aimed at sharing its goals with the entertainment industry while attracting and mentoring filmmakers to utilize their tools, which are AI-powered video models. This move marks another step in the increasing trend of artificial intelligence being applied to video production within the filmmaking sector.
Amit Jait, our CEO, stated during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that Luma aims to reach greater heights of intelligence specifically for creative tasks.

They’ve brought on board Verena Puhm, a seasoned producer and writer with impressive credits from BBC and CNN, to lead our innovative lab. Additionally, we’ve got Jon Finger, a filmmaker based in L.A., joining us as our Creative Workflow Executive. It’s an honor to be gaming alongside such talented individuals!
As a creative gamer, I’ll be diving into an innovative space, a unique blend of collaboration and learning hub, where I can team up with fellow artists to craft captivating content using the powerful Luma tool.
Puhm stated during an interview that it’s all about accessibility. Their aim is to create a dynamic research and development environment that serves both filmmakers and studio partners, offering them education and learning opportunities.” She and Jait explained that this process will be interactive, enabling the company to gather insights on how to develop effective tools for Hollywood in the future.
The lab, whose location executives said will be announced shortly, aims to open this summer.
Luma’s actions contribute significantly to transforming Hollywood into a more digitized and automated environment, with human-made films potentially enhanced or even replaced, as some critics argue, by videos generated by machines.
Similar to numerous AI video companies, Luma enjoys casual agreements with several prominent Hollywood studios for utilizing their technology. (A significant portion of this collaboration is ongoing, though anticipate a growing presence of artificial intelligence in your preferred films and series over the next year.)
Furthermore, the business structure incorporates a customer aspect as well: there’s a recurring $30 monthly subscription for those desiring to develop personal AI videos. Notably, Luma shares this approach with Moonvalley, a fellow startup which unveiled its own consumer-oriented strategy this past week.
In February 2024, Luma entered the market with Dream Machine, an advanced video creation tool that surpassed OpenAI’s Sora in terms of elegance and adaptability. Since then, the company has secured a funding of $100 million, with Amazon among its investors, to complement the $73 million it had previously acquired.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been thrilled to notice that Jaith’s team has been prioritizing “multimodal” features lately – essentially, they’re letting us interact with games not just through text, but also audio and video prompts. This shift in approach empowers users like me to have greater control over our gaming experience. One of the newest tools they’ve introduced is called Modify, which takes an ordinary gaming session and amps it up to something truly spectacular!
During a virtual demonstration, Finger showcased several scenarios such as transforming a modern Los Angeles garage into a woman riding a horse in an old Western town, or turning a backyard table into two men in a Medieval alehouse. Essentially, the cost of period films and other productions has been dramatically reduced with this innovation. As Finger put it, “We’ve been hitting our heads against the Hollywood wall for too long. Now, I can finally capture the shots I’ve always needed.

It’s widely accepted that Hollywood will adopt these new tools, but it’s yet to be seen which ones will become most popular. Luma is among several contenders, including Runway AI, which has collaborated with various Hollywood companies, and Google’s Veo line, a product of years of learning from Google and YouTube videos and currently performing well. However, the legal aspect of this field is uncertain due to Disney’s lawsuit against Midjourney and other copyright concerns regarding trained models.
Jait believes that these tools are significantly boosting the volume of output, which in turn, raises the chances of creating revolutionary work.
He pointed out that you’re updating your advertisement creative every half a year, whereas it should be revised every few seconds. He also questioned why you produce five films annually when you should be producing fifty or even one hundred.
“This changes the economics,” he added, “so drastically.”
