Former “Saturday Night Live” star Al Franken made headlines as a liberal Minnesota Senator.
One particular news cycle chased him out of office.
In his role as a writer and performer for “SNL”, Franken avoided allowing his political views to taint his work. Instead, he ensured that his skits were balanced, often delivering sharp humor to both political spectrums throughout his time there.
And he’s darn proud of it.
In a recent piece for Time, Franken explains that their aim was to make everyone laugh, recalling the strategic planning behind a satirical sketch featuring Dukakis and Bush Sr. This glimpse offers insight into the traditional show’s creative process, significantly contributing to its lasting impact on popular culture.
Said legacy hit its 50th anniversary mark this year.
Our intention has never been about taking sides; rather, it’s been about delivering insightful, shrewd observations on political matters.
What’s intriguing are the specifics, yet it was his closing remarks in the essay that hint strongly at the series’ subsequent fall.
For quite some time, the program steered clear of taking a stand on advocacy issues. However, this changed after Donald Trump was elected as President. [emphasis added]
That matters for several reasons.
Many “Saturday Night Live” cast members are reluctant to acknowledge that the show now serves as a platform for the Democratic National Committee. Time and again, show creator Lorne Michaels dismisses allegations of SNL’s pronounced political leanings during interviews.
Former participants tend to reminisce warmly about their time on the program, often going out of their way to avoid criticizing the establishment. In numerous instances, “Saturday Night Live” catapulted them into stardom.
One alum couldn’t hold his disdain back for the show’s political “evolution.”
Rob Schneider admitted that the 2016 Hillary Clinton / “Hallelujah” sketch broke him, to a degree.
Kudos to Franken for stating the obvious.
