Alamo Drafthouse Renames Brooklyn Location as Spike Lee Cinema

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for cinema, I must say that the renaming of the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Downtown Brooklyn to the Spike Lee Cinema is nothing short of spectacular! Growing up, I was captivated by Spike’s portrayal of Brooklyn life in films like “Do the Right Thing” and “Crooklyn.” These movies not only showcased the grit and resilience of the city but also highlighted its warmth and vibrancy.

On Thursday evening, a naming ceremony took place for the newly refurbished Alamo Drafthouse theater in Downtown Brooklyn, which is now known as the Spike Lee Cinema.

Tim League, founder of Alamo Drafthouse, bestowed the honor upon the filmmaker in the cinema’s foyer, explaining why Lee was an ideal fit to symbolize their location within the borough. “From the origins of cinema – ever since workers departed the factory in France and created the first movie – no individual has celebrated this cherished borough more than this gentleman,” said League.

Afterward, the theater’s founder asked Lee to read the freshly-mounted plaque which stated: “Much like numerous remarkable films from the past 40 years, this cinema is a production of Spike Lee. From his intricate depictions of life in Brooklyn, such as those seen in Do the Right Thing and Crooklyn, to his powerful portrayal of Malcolm X, his artistic vision has significantly influenced our society and left a lasting impression on this city. Thus, starting from Thursday, September 12th 2024, this Alamo Drafthouse will be officially named Spike Lee’s Cinema.

The director openly acknowledged that he wasn’t expecting this turn of events. He reminisced about the “old Brooklyn” he was familiar with from his childhood, remembering the movie theaters that are now closed which once dotted the area where the recently renamed Spike Lee Cinema is situated. “Brooklyn holds a special place in my heart,” he expressed, “and I believe it’s evident in the movies I’ve created.

To celebrate the acclaimed filmmaker’s accolade, the theater ran a showing of his semi-autobiographical movie, “Crooklyn“. The 1994 masterpiece was jointly penned by his siblings Joie and Cinqué, who were both present at the event. “As soon as I received this recognition,” the director shared with the audience, “[I knew I wanted to screen] Crooklyn“. He considered it a very meaningful film. Remarkably, he mentioned that it’s the one people often express their fondness for the most, even surpassing “Do the Right Thing” in popularity among his works.

After the viewing of the movie “Crooklyn“, the League facilitated a discussion between Lee and his other family members, exploring the process of creating the film.

Joie revealed that the movie, inspired by their personal struggle of losing their mother to cancer as a child, is still challenging to watch even 30 years after its release. This came as a shock to Lee, who discovered that Joie had only ever watched the entire film one time – during its initial premiere – and left the cinema during this viewing when Troy (the character representing Joie) returns home from staying with her aunt in the South and learns that her mother has been hospitalized. Furthermore, Joie validated that the scene where RuPaul’s character Connie seductively salsa dances with a partner at a bodega was indeed a real recollection from their childhood.

The night closed with a brief Q&A and a reception at the theater’s House of Wax Bar.
