As a cinephile with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for auteur-driven stories, I must say that the world premiere of Alfonso Cuaron’s “Disclaimer” at the Venice Film Festival has left me absolutely thrilled! Having witnessed the standing ovation from the discerning Italian crowd, I can confidently predict that this series is set to make waves in the global streaming landscape.
Five-time Academy Award-winner Alfonso Cuarón might have to make room for another award, approximately as large as an Emmy.
The critically acclaimed Mexican director’s highly anticipated streaming series, Disclaimer, earned a thunderous standing ovation during its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday evening. Apple Studios and Cuaron graciously screened the first four episodes for the formal crowd in Italy – each episode unfolding like the initial half of an extended movie. Despite the lengthy, over 3-hour runtime, the audience was prompt to rise and applaud as the lights came up within Venice’s Sala Grande cinema.
The movie “Disclaimer” is structured across seven chapters and is adapted from the popular novel of the same title penned by Renée Knight. Starring Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, this film made its grand debut on the Venice red carpet under the intense Italian sun, accompanied by Alfonso Cuaron.
Upon Blanchett’s entrance, there was an outpouring of applause – despite the fact that she wasn’t as she had humorously hinted earlier, wearing nothing but clothes. She donned a sleek and captivating black pantsuit with a deep V-neckline, adorned with a necklace of beads stacked at the back. Her fellow actors, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Louis Partidge, Leila George D’Onofrio, and Jung Ho-yeon, trailed behind her.
At the Venice festival, Hoyeon, also known as Jung and a renowned fashion influencer who gained fame from Netflix’s Squid Game, was the center of attention for numerous young festival attendees. As they excitedly cheered, she joined Blanchett in front of the cameras.
Note of Caution recounts the tale of Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), a renowned journalist who gained fame by exposing wrongdoings and violations. However, when she receives an unidentified novel, she is shocked to find herself as the central figure in a narrative that lays bare her deepest secrets. As Catherine frantically tries to unmask the author, she’s compelled to delve into her past before it wreaks havoc on not only her life but also her bond with her husband Robert (Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Smit-McPhee).
On October 11th, I’ll be diving into an exciting global premiere of the series on Apple TV+, where the first two episodes will be available. Subsequent episodes will drop every Friday thereafter. This series is a groundbreaking venture for me, as it’s my inaugural project under my deal with Apple Studios.
Previously, in Venice, Cuaron, Blanchett, and Klein held a press conference to talk about the production of Disclaimer. The director shared that they treated the project as if they were creating one long movie instead of a TV series. This is how the fortunate audience at Venice‘s Sala Grande were able to watch it unfold.
