As an ardent fan of Ali Fazal, I must say his unwavering commitment to his principles is nothing short of inspiring. His journey in Mirzapur, with its intense and often violent scenes, has been a testament to his ability to balance art and morality. The way he immerses himself completely in his roles, finding solace and purpose even amidst chaos, is truly commendable.
Ali Fazal recently discussed his encounters with intense action sequences in Mirzapur, expressing his frequent doubts about the need for such graphic scenes. He reminisced about a specific instance where, following the shooting of a gruesome scene, he felt he couldn’t shake off the intensity of the moment. Moreover, the actor disclosed that his adherence to his convictions has cost him various roles, as he draws the line when things become excessively extreme.
In a chat with Sucharita Tyagi, Ali Fazal opened up about ethical dilemmas related to his roles, specifically in the series Mirzapur. He confessed that the show’s intense violence clashes with his inherent character. Although he has grown accustomed to viewing violent media, he continues to grapple with the actions demanded of him within the show. He stated that the violent essence of Mirzapur presents a hurdle because it contradicts his personal beliefs.
When queried about his approach to resolving such disagreements, the actor from Mirzapur stated that the best method for him is completely embracing the character he portrays. He likened this experience to meditation, describing it as an activity demanding deep concentration.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I personally find solace in two distinctly meditative experiences: immersing myself in a movie at the theater or being behind the camera during filming. The tumultuous energy that precedes shooting doesn’t touch me, but once the camera is rolling, I feel an unparalleled sense of tranquility and direction.
Ali Fazal openly shared that he’s never shied away from expressing his unease about overly extreme scenes on set. He admitted that because of the advantages he holds, he can now more effectively voice his concerns, although it’s occasionally led to a loss of opportunities in his career.
In simpler terms, he remarked, “It’s likely because of this that I’ve missed out on many opportunities. However, such ethical quandaries do arise.” Looking back at his time in Mirzapur, he remembered an instance where his character unnecessarily took a life.
Ali expressed his struggle to accept the role, finding it challenging on both personal and professional levels. He felt morally conflicted about the script, questioning its necessity and wondering aloud, “Why was this written at all?” In simpler terms, he said, “I just couldn’t make peace with it. The character couldn’t have changed either. It seemed wrong to me – like, why would someone write something like that?
The actor went on to reveal that he frequently struggled with aligning his own thoughts and actions with those of his character, avoiding judgment. At the same time, he would ponder over the director’s decisions, expressing curiosity by saying, “What’s the reason behind this?” He admitted, “There are so many ‘whys’ I have to ask.
On the other hand, he mentioned that these queries might accumulate rapidly, potentially causing stressful debates between him and the scriptwriters/directors, and at times even risking heated arguments.
Ali mentioned that he eventually managed to catch up with the popular series, now in its third season, as he found the violence challenging at first. Yet, he’s been growing accustomed to it bit by bit. He clarified that his exposure to actual-world violence through news sources made him understand that he needs to adapt to dealing with such content.
Professionally speaking, Ali Fazal has some fascinating projects coming up. These include roles in Anurag Basu’s Metro, Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947, and Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life. He also featured in the sneak peek for Mirzapur – The Film, a big-screen interpretation of the widely acclaimed crime drama series.
It’s been verified that Ali will be part of the upcoming Hollywood movie “Rule Breakers.” This production also features Phoebe Waller-Bridge as both a writer and actress.
