As a film enthusiast with a penchant for gripping dramas and a soft spot for witty banter, I must say that my journey through the world of television has been nothing short of exhilarating. The Rookie, with its charismatic cast and intriguing storylines, was a delightful addition to my screen time. The arrival of Ali Larter as Dr. Grace Sawyer in Season 2 was a particularly noteworthy moment.
The highly successful drama series by ABC, titled “The Rookie“, experienced a surge in popularity when it first aired in 2018, eventually leading to a spinoff during its extended run on the broadcast network. Fans can take comfort knowing that the original show shows no signs of slowing down. The lead character, played by renowned actor Nathan Fillion, is a household name. In Season 2, fan-favorite performer Ali Larter joined the cast, initially planned for a two-episode stint but her role eventually expanded to a significant 13-episode arc. Now, she’s making waves in another series, produced by esteemed television creator Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown)). During the press day for Landman, MovieWeb spoke with Larter and learned more about her enjoyable time on The Rookie — and whether she might reprise her role as Dr. Grace Sawyer in the future.
Larter shared with us that playing Grace was a blast, and working alongside Nathan was equally enjoyable. She mentioned an intriguing point: now that they’ve stepped out of the Hollywood limelight, the idea of doing television work like that doesn’t hold as much appeal for her anymore. However, she found it truly remarkable to work on the Texas-set show, Landman, and be part of something unique. She also expressed that being on The Rookie was fantastic during her stint there.
Landman: ‘Something Special’
After her time as a rookie, Larter’s career is moving forward with her latest role in Sheridan’s exciting new series, “Landman”. In this show, Larter portrays Angela, an unpredictable ex-wife to Billy Bob Thornton’s leading character. As Angela, Larter is quick-witted, seductive, and downright amusing, providing a delightful contrast to the equally outrageous Thornton. Their frequent friendly-exes banter adds comedic relief to an otherwise tense story about the misfortunes that unfold within the West Texas oil industry.
Tommy (Thornton) and Angela regularly find themselves taking care of their energetic 17-year-old daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph), leading to frequent disagreements between the parents regarding how to manage their child. Larter discussed with us the excitement of collaborating with a skilled actor like Thornton.
The guy just has to, like, mutter something out and he’s so funny. He’s so gifted. I mean, he’s just such an incredibly talented actor. And so, to be able to work with him, it just raises the bar every single day. That was amazing.
After that, Larter remarked, “Michelle, playing Ainsley in the series, is hilarious too, right? It’s fascinating because there are instances where you truly sense the gravity and seriousness of the oil industry’s perilous realm — and then there are scenes at the country club, or with the billionaires and tycoons. It’s as if the show effortlessly combines various moods to create something unique. And whenever things get too intense, Taylor is brilliant at knowing when to lighten the tone. He’s an exceptional storyteller.
You can see it all unfold now. Landman is now streaming on Paramount+ here.
