Alia Bhatt’s dad Mahesh Bhatt was going through ‘personal crisis’ during Arth’s shoot reveals Shabana Azmi; admits not having a script

As an ardent fan of Indian cinema, I have had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary journey of Shabana Azmi through her illustrious 50-year career. The story of Arth, a film that not only captivated audiences but also transformed the lives of those involved in its making, is a testament to the power of cinematic art.

Back in 1982, I, an ardent fan, was utterly captivated by Mahesh Bhatt’s masterstroke of a drama film, Arth. This cinematic marvel starred none other than the legendary Shabana Azmi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. The movie was nothing short of a box office sensation, showering accolades and fame upon its stellar cast. Fast-forward to present times, and Azmi herself shared an intriguing anecdote about the film’s creation – it seems Mr. Bhatt was ‘in the throes of a personal crisis’, yet he miraculously brought this timeless classic to life without a script in hand!

I was humbled to receive the Excellence in Cinema Award at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, marking my half-century journey in cinema. At this prestigious event, I not only received an honor but also had the opportunity to share my experiences and insights in a masterclass.

However, Shabana Azmi quickly pointed out that there was a drive within the filmmaker (Alia Bhatt) to finish the movie. It seemed as if, at the press of a button, Alia would instantly slip into character. Praising the experience, Shabana Azmi said that on occasions when she declined doing a challenging scene right after it was explained, Alia’s father would remind her, ‘There can be no artificial conflict; we don’t have time for that, you should go ahead with it.’

Recently, the actress from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani shared a video on Instagram showcasing her various emotions. In the post’s caption, she reflected on how the movie significantly impacted her life. She also shared her anticipation about revisiting it on the big screen once more. Azmi wrote, “When Mahesh Bhatt offered me Arth, he said ‘This film will alter your life.’ It did. I’ll be watching it with the audience again on the big screen after many years. This is the allure of film festivals.

Shabana Azmi was awarded the National Film Award for her exceptional performance as Best Actress in the film “Arth.” It’s worth mentioning that this movie also featured talented actresses like Smita Patil, Raj Kiran, and Rohini Hattangadi in supporting roles.
