As a die-hard movie fan who’s grown up with the chilling tales of the Alien franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement about the prospect of another installment! Being a child of the 80s, the original Alien film left an indelible mark on my psyche, and while I must admit that some of the prequels haven’t quite hit the nail on the head, the loyal fanbase has remained steadfast.
I’m thrilled to share that a long-awaited sequel to “Alien: Covenant” is on its way, and one of its beloved stars, Katherine Waterston, seems eager for a reunion with the franchise. Legendary director Ridley Scott is slated to helm another “Alien” film, rumored to be a continuation of “Covenant,” following the massive success of Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus.” Despite the prequels not being the most successful installments in the series, it appears that the dedicated fanbase who have been with us since “Prometheus” will finally be rewarded for their unwavering patience. Excitingly, Katherine Waterston herself has hinted at her interest in revisiting this iconic role.
Waterston discussed with The Playlist the possibility of playing Daniels again, who was among the few survivors in ‘Alien: Covenant’. While there’s no confirmation she’ll be back, it would mark a first for a human lead from one of the prequels to appear in a subsequent film. Upon hearing Scott is developing another installment, Waterston expressed enthusiasm and willingness to reprise her role as Daniels.
I find it incredibly thrilling at the prospect that he may embark on another project, regardless of Daniels’ fate in the cryo-pod. The idea of being involved again and working with him is something I deeply cherish. He’s an extraordinary individual, a living legend, and a fantastic collaborator.
The last time viewers witnessed Waterston as Daniels was during the suspenseful ending of Covenant. In a sudden turn of events, it’s disclosed that Michael Fassbender’s David had seized control of the spacecraft and subjected Daniels to cryosleep, presumably for more android experiments. The outcome of her character remains uncertain, but Waterston remains optimistic about Daniels’ survival after being confined in a cryo-tube.
From a personal perspective, and perhaps because I’m somewhat self-centered, I perceived a way for Daniels to escape that situation. To me, her character in that storyline was becoming a potential hero, learning she had the abilities to rise up, but didn’t quite reach that point yet. So, if given the chance, I would be thrilled to explore this further. But even if it just means sitting there with my popcorn during the opening weekend, I will definitely be there.
The ‘Alien’ Franchise is Not Going Away Anytime Soon
The future of the Alien series is looking more promising than ever, following the successful reception of Alien: Romulus. Now, this popular IP is set to debut its first live-action television series, titled Alien: Earth, which is being created by the genius behind Fargo, Noah Hawley. This new series brings the terrifying Xenomorphs to planet Earth, 30 years before Ridley Scott’s original film. A chilling teaser has been released recently, showcasing glimpses of the title creature and tentatively suggesting a summer 2025 release window. Additionally, there are whispers that the upcoming Predator animated anthology movie could potentially feature an Alien vs Predator storyline.
There’s some debate about whether Alien: Covenant will be a sequel or a spin-off of the original storyline, similar to what happened with Prometheus. However, it’s certain that the upcoming movie won’t shy away from its connection to the franchise, given that the term “Alien” is making a comeback in popular culture and enjoying a more favorable reception following some previous mistakes.
