For his Fall/Winter 2025 collection, designer Walter Van Beirendonck ventured a bit beyond the usual fashion district of the 18th arrondissement in Paris.
As guests take their seats for the show, they find a note detailing an intriguing statement from the designer. The statement says, “The rise of vintage and archival clothing in fashion is commendable as it moves us towards a more eco-friendly future. However, it means that we see fewer innovative or unique styles on our streets. Nostalgia for past subcultures’ aesthetics leaves little room for groundbreaking new methods, materials, or designs to grace the runways.” Walter Van Beirendonck seems to be looking ahead and seems to challenge the current fashion industry by questioning how we can advance if we are always gazing at the past. This thought-provoking commentary suggests that fashion professionals, stylists, designers, and editors ought to focus on shaping the future instead of being fixated on the past.
Designer Van Beirendonck gazes towards the future with an otherworldly approach, incorporating cosmic elements and motifs suggestive of extraterrestrial life. His designs encompass a variety of pieces such as silicone finger extensions akin to E.T.’s, along with wide-legged trousers, adorned baseball caps with fringes, dystopian workwear, vibrant suits featuring unique cuts, and more. Models strutted down the runway and then took a seat on an alien-like chair that complemented their attire, maintaining this position until the end of the show. Each model ended the spectacle by flashing the peace sign. Consistently, Van Beirendonck’s strongest message in his collections has been about promoting peace, a sentiment echoed once again in this collection.
