As a die-hard fan of Alison Brie and Dave Franco, I am beyond excited about their upcoming film, “Together.” Their unique bond and shared passion for artistry have already produced some incredible films, and I have no doubt that this collaboration will continue to push boundaries and create magic on the silver screen.
As a fervent admirer, it’s my hope that Alison Brie and Dave Franco are embarking on a lifelong journey of creative camaraderie. Much like the legendary partnerships of Godard and Miéville or Fincher and Chaffin, this couple thrives in the professional and artistic realm, an exception to the norm among most married couples worldwide. The enchantingly attractive duo (dubbed as such by the recently established Obviously Magazine) have graced us with a series of exceptional films, be it as actors or with one taking up the mantle of writer or director – _The LEGO Movie, The Little Hours, The Disaster Artist, The Rental_, and _Somebody I Used to Know_.
In January, their newest movie is set to debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and it promises to be quite something. Titled “Together“, the film’s initial image gives off a rather intense vibe. Here’s a sneak peek and a brief summary:
During our conversation with Franco and Brie for the show “Somebody I Used to Know“, they shared heartwarmingly about the joy of working together. Franco expressed, “Working with Alison just makes me feel unstoppable. If something goes wrong, because we’re in it together, we can lean on each other, support one another, and everything will be alright.” Aww, isn’t that sweet, but quite different from the characters they portray in “Together“. It seems that Brie and Franco are the main actors in the movie, with Damon Herriman being the only other actor, so the title “Together” truly fits the bill. The plot summary goes like this:
Moving to the countryside puts strain on a couple’s bond, and then they experience a mysterious supernatural event that sets off an intense change in their love, lives, and physical forms.
In a concise “Getting to Know the Filmmaker” video, similar to those created by the Sundance Institute for upcoming directors, Michael Shanks, director of “Together,” was somewhat reserved about the film, yet he did reveal some pages from his storyboard. He mentioned, “I hope that doesn’t give away too much.” You can view the image below…
‘Together’ Uses Horror to Illustrate a Difficult Relationship
Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro provides some invaluable analysis of the film:
Michael Shanks, both writer and director, infuses horror with a mischievous zest, reveling in the creation of vividly terrifying scenes. In his first full-length directorial venture, he skillfully orchestrates a series of chilling body horror sequences. The story unfolds as a troubled couple embarks on a move away from the city to a more secluded life. As they gradually lose touch with their home, friends, and any sense of self beyond their tumultuous relationship, Shanks’ astute screenplay effectively portrays their emotional turmoil by exploring the horrors inherent in codependent relationships.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that the journey for this duo, played by the talented Dave Franco and Alison Brie, is going to take a turn for the worse before it improves – significantly so. Their electrifying chemistry on-screen is undeniable as they immerse themselves completely in this peculiar universe, plunging headlong into a tempest of physical and emotional turmoil. Michael Shanks’ earlier script, titled “Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel,” was highlighted on the 2021 Black List.
Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Mike Cowap, Andrew Mittman, Erik Feig, and Max Silva are serving as producers. Franco is also starring in another film at Sundance this year called “Bubble & Squeak“, a comedy featuring Himesh Patel, Steven Yeun, Sarah Goldberg, and Matt Berry. The movie takes its name from the charmingly named cabbage and potato dish. MovieWeb will be attending Sundance, so stay tuned for updates.
