As a huge fan of “The Boys,” I can’t help but be intrigued by the enigmatic character of Black Noir, portrayed brilliantly by Nathan Mitchell. In the recent Season 4 finale, we saw Black Noir reach new heights as he fully embraced his role as the ruthless and deadly Supe.
Caution: If you haven’t watched the final episode of The Boys season 4 on Amazon Prime yet, consider this a warning as major spoilers lie ahead.
In simple terms, the events of “The Boys” Season 5 are set to bring complexity to many characters’ lives. The finale of Season 4 left Butcher’s plans with Ryan and the virus hanging ominously, while Ashley found herself in a cliffhanger due to Compound V. Most protagonists were arrested under new martial law. Black Noir, however, experienced a major development, achieving his transformation into the named Supes’ member, “Black Noir,” through a violent turn of events.
Nathan shared insights about talking to fellow cast members, voiced his agreement with my theory on Gen V’s characteristics, and criticized the ethical decline of The New Noir as depicted throughout season 4.
In my perspective, he comes across as a complex character with a dark side. He doesn’t derive pleasure from harming people; instead, he feels obligated to do so for his job. He expresses regret and apologies, showing remnants of good within him. However, there is an underlying corruption that stems from necessity. It seems he was unaware of the true nature of his role when he joined, but now finds himself trapped in it. His strong sense of duty compels him to fully embrace his character and excel at it. Despite his internal conflict, he ultimately recognizes that adhering to this role is the key to moving forward. Thus, he embarks on a journey towards embracing his persona as Noir.
Acting takes on a peculiar challenge for Mitchell now, as he transitioned from portraying the emotionally damaged Noir in the initial three seasons to embodying the V-infused Superhero with acting ambitions and an functional voicebox. The new version of Noir appears devoid of the intense anger and insecurities that characterized other members of The Seven. Consequently, a significant aspect of his storyline in Season 4 revolves around discovering an authentic means to embody Black Noir, rather than merely portraying him.
Happy Ending?

Noir appears to develop a darker side as he follows Homelander’s orders with The Deep, eliminating Vought employees who pose a threat. He no longer feels uneasy about taking lives, and even finds pleasure in doing so after mistakenly killing an innocent woman named Ashley. This newfound enjoyment of violence may indicate that Noir is adopting a more morally corrupt mindset similar to his predecessor.
Black Noir’s reaction to being aroused by violent acts didn’t appear upset or distressed, suggesting he may have strayed from the virtuous path. However, it’s not impossible that he might change his ways in Season 5 and join the forces of good for an anticipated showdown between Homelander and The Butcher. Yet, this possibility seems less probable given his current behavior.
In our conversation, I inquired from Nathan Mitchell if showrunner Eric Kripke made him experiment with unusual voices for Black Noir. It seems that the scene where Black Noir displays his “murder boner” could have taken a turn with a different outcome based on what Nathan shared:
As a seasoned actor with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the art of paraphrasing is a delicate one. It requires a deep understanding of the original text and the ability to preserve its essence while making it sound fresh and new. In my latest project, we encountered an instance where we had to cut out a few lines from the last episode’s script. Initially, I was taken aback as those lines held significant weight for me personally. I had put a lot of emotion and energy into delivering them, and the thought of discarding them felt like a loss.
As a fan, I must admit that my curiosity is piqued by the thought of alternate takes of that scene. Yet, deep down, I’m convinced that nothing could top the original moment’s hilarious and brazen portrayal of the character’s aroused state. I mean, if he just yelled it out for all to hear, I’d be laughing so hard!
Sadly, Black Noir’s return to action may take some time yet, but fans might catch a glimpse of Nathan Mitchell in the second season of “Gen V,” now being produced. For more upcoming shows, check out our 2024 TV calendar!
