'All Hell Broke Loose': Apparently, Dune's Viral Popcorn Bucket Caused Ryan Reynolds To Pivot To Lewd Wolverine Bucket From Another Idea

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast with a knack for spotting the most creative marketing strategies, I must admit that Ryan Reynolds and his team have truly outdone themselves this time! The Wolverine popcorn bucket, inspired by the viral Dune bucket, is a testament to their keen eye for humor and ability to tap into the zeitgeist.

In the last three Deadpool films, Ryan Reynolds’ prowess in movie promotion would undoubtedly earn him an Olympic gold medal (should it be a recognized sport). A prime example of his comedic marketing for both Deadpool and Wolverine was the creation of a Wolverine popcorn bucket, which playfully mocked the viral Dune bucket from recent memory. This witty bucket has since gained so much popularity that it’s sold out online. We now have an insider look at how this whole idea came to life behind the scenes.

Rod Mason, who serves as the vice president of business development at Zinc Group, is employed by the company responsible for producing the trendy specialty popcorn containers that have been popular in movie theaters recently. In a conversation with Yahoo! regarding the development of the explicit Wolverine popcorn bucket, Mason stated this:

In January, someone managed to secure [the Dune replica bucket], which then caused quite a stir. It seems Ryan Reynolds didn’t know him, but apparently he expressed a desire for his own bucket to be as trendy and captivating as the Dune one. Interestingly, they had already acquired a concept for Deadpool, but they decided to abandon that project and return to production instead, focusing on making the bucket similar to the one from Dune.

According to Mason, the popcorn bucket for the movie “Dune” was produced in July 2023, a month after the idea for the third “Deadpool” bucket was proposed. When people found out about the “Dune” container, including Ryan Reynolds, they decided to rethink their designs to mock the NSFW jokes that fans had been making about the “Dune” design.

As a longtime comic book fan and avid gamer, I must say that the recent release of the Deadpool and Wolverine popcorn buckets and the new Deadpool Xbox controller are absolutely fantastic additions to the merchandise market! Growing up, I always dreamed of having unique items like these that truly embodied the spirit of my favorite characters. The fact that they’ve become so popular among fans is a testament to their quality and appeal.

During the promotional tour for the sequel, the Dune popcorn bucket became a buzzworthy topic among the high-profile cast, sparking viral reactions. At San Diego Comic-Con, it quickly sold out, and even made an appearance on a recent Saturday Night Live skit starring Ayo Edebiri from The Bear.

Although the Deadpool and Wolverine bucket was designed with a hint of suggestiveness, the Dune bucket, as explained by Mason, lacked such an intent.

One aspect of the task [for designing the Dune merchandise] was determining what would be visually appealing and desirable to keep, taking into account that fans are well-versed in this universe. It’s crucial to remember that these fans not only appreciate actors like Oscar Isaac but also crave items that carry a strong symbolism. In the case of Dune, the worm is the most recognizable emblem.

The team considered designing a popcorn bucket similar to the “pain box” from the films, but eventually opted for the sandworm as the most recognizable symbol to boost the movie’s promotion. With the popularity of the Dune bucket, many upcoming 2024 movies are now featuring unique popcorn containers, such as the new Alien: Romulus Xenomorph bucket.

Right now, you have the opportunity to catch “Deadpool and Wolverine” in the cinemas. In the meantime, we are working on determining which upcoming film could create the next internet sensation, similar to a viral challenge involving a bucket.
