In the world of Hollywood, it’s customary when transforming a timeless television series into a full-length movie, to extend invitations for cameos to the original cast members of that series. It’s important to recognize and honor the past before moving forward.
1998’s adaptation of “Lost in Space,” set to air on SYFY later this week (click here for scheduling details), maintained the same long-standing philosophy of filmmaking, and it didn’t deviate from that tradition with its star-studded cast including William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Lacey Chabert, Jack Johnson, Gary Oldman, Heather Graham, Matt LeBlanc, and Jared Harris.
For More on Science Fiction Movies
Twelve years after its release, the 2012 Fantasy Epic continues to be one of the most thrilling action movies to date. John Carpenter recently disclosed that “The Thing” contains a significant clue that resolves the ambiguous ending. Meanwhile, an intriguing theory about Back to the Future has emerged among fans, and here’s how Christopher Lloyd reacted to it.
The 2012 fantasy movie is still one of the best action movies today, and John Carpenter said that “The Thing” contains a key detail that explains its confusing ending. Additionally, there’s a popular fan theory about Back to the Future, and this is what Christopher Lloyd had to say about it.
Certainly, the film written by Akiva Goldman and directed by Stephen Hopkins, known for Predator 2, does include brief cameos from many actors who had major roles in the famous sci-fi TV series that aired on CBS over three seasons from 1965 to 1968. These appearances can be both physical and non-physical.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the subtle nods to the original TV series hidden within the first half hour of this reboot, as once the Robinson family and their crew embark on the advanced spaceship Jupiter 2, there are no new characters introduced. So, let’s delve deeper into where you can spot the classic actors from the 1998 film adaptation of Lost in Space.
All of the original Lost in Space television stars with cameos in the 1998 film adaptation — and where to spot them
To start off, let me tell you about Mark Goddard who brilliantly portrayed the charismatic Don West, the dashing pilot from the original series. In the movie adaptation, he makes a special appearance as the superior officer of my character, West. He then assigns my role to pilot the Jupiter 2 mission following the unfortunate demise of its initial pilot at the hands of treacherous forces.
Next up is June Lockhart, portraying Maureen from the series as Robinson matriarch. In the film, she makes a brief appearance as Will Robinson’s principal at school. However, in a comical twist, Will manipulates her holographic image during this scene, causing her to appear distorted while delivering news about his misbehavior to Maureen (played by Mimi Rogers) on screen.
In the television series, Marta Kristen and Angela Cartwright played Judy and Penny Robinson. Now, in this scenario, they are acting as two reporters during a Jupiter 2 press conference led by Professor John Robinson, a role originally played by Guy Williams (who passed away in 1989), portrayed by Hurt instead. This could be likened to Heather Graham and Lacey Chabert taking on the roles of Judy and Penny Robinson in the movie.

To conclude, let’s not forget about Dick Tufeld, who lent his voice once more for the Robot, a character known for its distinctive design and famous catchphrase (“Watch out, Will Robinson! Watch out!”), which left a lasting impression on the original television series.
As a dedicated fan, I can share that rumors swirl about Bill Mumy, the original Will Robinson from Lost in Space and a veteran of The Twilight Zone, proposing to reprise his role as older Will in the movie’s final act. Unfortunately, this idea was rejected by Hopkins. In the end, Jack Johnson portrayed young Will, while Jared Harris took on the challenge of playing his adult self.
According to reports, Jonathan Harris, who portrayed the antagonist Dr. Zachary Smith on the TV series (previously played by Gary Oldman in the movie), allegedly refused a cameo appearance, stating emphatically to TV Guide: “Let it be known that I have never taken on a walk-on or minor role in my career! And I have no plans to do so now.
