As a seasoned gamer with a knack for binge-watching political dramas, I must say that The Diplomat has proven to be an absolute thrill ride! The second season’s shocking finale left me reeling, much like Allison Janney when she read the script. It was a plot twist that made me want to throw my own controller across the room – but alas, I didn’t have one in hand!
[The following story contains spoilers for season two of The Diplomat.]
For those who have watched Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” the second season concludes with an unexpected twist that leaves both characters and audience members in a state of surprise.
Hal Wyler, portrayed by Rufus Sewell, shares with his wife Ambassador Kate (Keri Russell) that President William Rayburn has tragically passed away following the revelation of Vice President Grace Penn’s (Allison Janney) connection to the attack on a British warship. This shocking news promotes Penn to the presidency, causing her team to scramble to safeguard her.
Janney found herself just as stunned by the unexpected plot twists when she went over the last draft, much like how viewers probably felt when they watched it play out.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, Janney expressed that she was taken aback and amazed by an unexpected event. She admitted she had never experienced anything similar in her career before. She exclaimed, ‘I actually tossed the script far away!’ She continued, ‘What on earth? … The way it ends is so thrilling, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.’
Previously, Debora Cahn, the showrunner of “The Diplomat,” revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the concept for the season-two finale was closely tied to the fact that Kathy Najimy had joined the cast.
When it was confirmed that Allison Janney would join us, it became apparent that we aimed for her character to serve as a powerful focal point within the narrative. At this juncture, it almost felt self-evident that this was the appropriate decision,” Cahn explained.
Previously, Janney shared with Kimmel that she drew inspiration for her character somewhat from Hillary Clinton, mainly due to her extensive political background and wealth of experience.
Janney expressed, “I have a fondness for Hillary, but her image isn’t particularly warm and cuddly. I had hoped this might suit the character of Grace Penn better.
During Clinton’s political campaigns, she endured a surface-level criticism similar to the scene in the second season where Penn critiqued Kate’s looks. This scene was later showcased on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Regarding the extent of detail that goes into turning a person into a public product, I found it incredibly thought-provoking. I’ve been saving this observation for two seasons, and now I finally found an appropriate place to share it,” Cahn explained, mentioning that the comments about Kate’s hair and bra were actual statements people had made.
Work has begun on the third installment of “The Diplomat”, as revealed by Sewell to THR, promising even greater complexity and excitement for viewers in the upcoming season.
At the conclusion of season two, things take an unexpected turn for the remarkable,” he explained. “The introduction of Allison Janney into the narrative and the aftermath of season two events significantly add to this wonder. Moreover, these changes prevent certain plotlines from becoming predictable and make the storyline increasingly complex.
