Alpha actor Bobby Deol says his dad Dharmendra was ‘never a friend while growing’; recalls seeing him only for few hours

As an ardent fan, I find myself deeply moved by Bobby Deol‘s journey, not just as an actor, but as a son and a father. His reminiscence of growing up with a superstar father, Dharmendra, paints a vivid picture of a unique upbringing that was filled with both distance and respect.

Bobby Deol may be known as “Lord Bobby” due to his impressive portrayal in Animal alongside Ranbir Kapoor, but deep down, he cherishes his role as a family man. Often seen with his brother Sunny Deol and father Dharmendra, Bobby shared memories of growing up with a legendary father like Dharmendra in a recent interview. Contrary to popular belief, the Sholay star wasn’t overly strict, but he also maintained a professional distance rather than being a friend to him.

During an intimate conversation with Humans of Bombay, Bobby Deol shared that, back in his day, it seemed ordinary because his father Dharmendra hailed from a small town. He pointed out that the society, culture, and mindsets in small towns were significantly distinct from urban lifestyles. “My dad wasn’t authoritative, but he was never a friend during my upbringing. He was always engrossed in work,” the actor of Animal recalled, adding that his grandfather was firm with Dharmendra, which made it natural for him to be the same way.

Moving forward, the Barsaat actor reminisced about times when they would only spend a limited amount of time together, either late at night or early in the morning. Regarding the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani star, Bobby expressed that he didn’t feel fear but rather had a sense of respect towards him. “As you mature, it can be challenging to distinguish between respect and fear,” he explained. At that stage in their lives, they struggled with finding an easy way to communicate with their parents.

Now that he’s taken on the role of a father and his own dad has grown older, the narrative has shifted and it’s now his turn to care for those who once cared for him. As time goes by, his parents are aging and require attention. Bobby Deol summed it up by saying, “Change is inevitable, that’s just the way life goes.” On a different note, Bobby is geared up to portray the villain in Shiv Rawail’s upcoming action movie Alpha. This intriguing film marks the debut of Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in YRF Spy Universe, making it the first major production to focus on female leads.
