‘Always The Trickiest.’ Blue Bloods Ended This Week With One Final Dinner Scene, But I Just Learned About A Competition That Was Going On While Filming ‘Em

As a die-hard fan of Blue Bloods who has watched every single episode since its inception, I must say that the show’s finale felt like the end of an era. The Reagan family dinners were always my favorite part, and it was heartwarming to see them all gathered one last time, even if behind the scenes there was a different kind of tension going on.

Spoilers lie ahead for the Blue Bloods series finale, “End of Tour.”

After 14 seasons, the long-running series “Blue Bloods” concluded as part of the 2024 TV schedule, culminating in one last Reagan family dinner, which had been a significant part of the show throughout its run. Over time, secrets behind these iconic dinner scenes have emerged (such as the reason they opted for fake silverware instead). Interestingly, I recently discovered that there was a contest happening during the filming of those cherished scenes.

The Reagan family dinner scenes are perhaps the best part of each episode, and Tom Selleck even commemorated the final one with a heartfelt poem. Many of the clan’s dinners can be funny, while some involve tension between the characters. Now, it would seem that there was a different kind of tension going behind the scenes. Blue Bloods writer Jack Ciapciak gave up more family dinner secrets while speaking with Us Weekly. A interesting tidbit is the fact that directors would have competitions to see who could cut down their filming time the most since working on them used to take around six hours:

By the closing stage, I believe the quickest one managed to complete within approximately three hours, an impressive feat… Our team has been part of this production since its inception and found smart ways to film scenes efficiently. Fortunately, they succeeded in doing so. Over time, we observed a reduction in the production duration, turning it into a challenge among the guest directors.

It’s astonishing how a brief moment captured on camera can require extensive time in filming, given that productions must capture all the necessary angles. In essence, it seems like everyone involved found their stride and learned the intricacies of filming dinner scenes. Moreover, the directors’ innovative approach to reduce shooting times was quite impressive. As per Jack Ciapciak’s observations, these modifications were indeed essential.

Finding the perfect balance for those scenes has always been the most challenging. How can we make them feel authentic, engaging, and true-to-life? That’s definitely been the hardest part.

More on Blue Bloods

There was a time when I was really looking forward to the rumored Blue Bloods spinoff that CBS hinted at a few months back. But now, I’m curious about what’s actually happening, as per one member of the Reagan family.

The preparation for family dinners, including the cast, multiple camera angles, and various other aspects, made them quite complex from a production standpoint. However, given how many seasons the show ran, it’s not surprising that the crew eventually found ways to streamline filming and settle into a rhythm. It’s strange to think that we won’t see any more of these dinners, but the last one was truly exceptional.

At the last supper of the Reagan family, some distinguished attendees joined, such as Erin’s daughter Nicky (Sami Gayle), Danny’s eldest son Jack (Tony Terraciano), Joe Regan’s son Joe Hill (Will Hochman), and Erin’s former/future spouse again, Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann). To add to the excitement, a significant revelation was made. Jamie and Eddie happily announced they are expecting a new member of the Reagan family, causing everyone to rejoice over this long-awaited happy news.

Regarding the directors’ efforts to shorten the shooting duration, it seems like the cast members cherished each moment during the final dinner scene so much that it might have taken an extended period to film. I’m keen to discover how long they spent filming this particular scene, as I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a more time-consuming process than usual.

As the Reagan family dinners might be a thing of the past, I find solace in revisiting them through streaming episodes of Blue Bloods on Paramount+. For now, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some behind-the-scenes facts about those shared meals to surface and offer fans like me an even deeper understanding of the show’s creation process.
