The streaming platform Amazon Prime Video has decided not to renew Clean Slate, the final project completed by television icon Norman Lear, following its first season. Laverne Cox, George Wallace, and their fellow co-creator Dan Ewen shared this sad news in an article they wrote for Deadline.
The series “Clean Slate” debuted on Amazon Prime Video on February 6; however, it was terminated by the end of March. The team consisting of Cox, Wallace, and Ewen described the show as a “labor of love” and a “seven-year endeavor” that “vanished in a moment’s notice, like smoke from an extinguished flame.”
In February 6, “Clean Slate” started streaming on Amazon Prime Video; unfortunately, the show was canceled by the end of March. Cox, Wallace, and Ewen referred to it as a long-cherished project that took them seven years to complete, only for it to disappear swiftly, much like smoke dissipating after being extinguished.
Perhaps a little bit of a shot there on how Amazon conducts its business.
Cox and Wallace were the ones who introduced the show to Lear. Lear, a comedy titan who had been entertaining audiences for decades upon decades, passed away in December 2023 at the age of 101. Lear was the brilliant comedic mind behind shows such as “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Good Times,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
We attempted to contact Amazon Prime Video for their comments regarding the cancellation, but they have yet to respond promptly.
In its review, THR called Clean Slate a “warm, well-meaning and not especially funny comedy.”
Wallace took on the role of Harry Slate, proprietor of the Slate Family Car Wash, a place aptly named for its rejuvenating purpose – a ‘Fresh Start’. After two and a half decades of distance, Harry is elated to reconcile with the individual he believed was his timid, insecure son, Daniel Fienberg noted in his critique. However, instead of encountering the anticipated sad, insecure individual, he meets Desiree (Laverne Cox), a confident and generally content person who has left behind her career in the New York City art scene.
The reunion doesn’t actually go down in the sort-of classic sitcom-y way one might expect.
Harry seems slightly startled for about 30 seconds and unintentionally uses the wrong gender pronoun for his daughter once or twice. However, he quickly accepts this and shows more surprise when he finds out Desiree is a vegetarian, indicating that he’s quite different from the traditional character Archie Bunker.
And All in the Family this was not.
