Amazon Games Boss affirms that ‘huge’ Tomb Raider title is on-course amid Embracer splits

As a long-time fan of Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series, I must admit that the news about the game’s development under Amazon Games has left me both excited and a little concerned. With such a rich history and high expectations, I can’t help but feel a tad anxious about the “huge” task at hand for Crystal Dynamics.

Lara Croft consistently remains a familiar figure for gamers, as the influential Tomb Raider series continues to hold significant importance within gaming history.

However, it’s been quite a while since Croft has been immersed in her pastime of finding herself in the strangest predicaments, vanquishing monsters and uncovering concealed riches; we haven’t seen a main series game since 2018, which marks the longest stretch between major instalments for this franchise since Tomb Raider debuted in 1996.

In 2022, a game was announced, and it’s currently being handled by Amazon Games. As development progresses, the lead of the project, Christoph Hartmann, has confirmed that the title remains unaffected by the split of its original studio, Embracer.

Planned to “merge the timeframes“, it was ironic that the tagline implied unity, as Embracer Group has split into three separate studios this year. This leaves titles like Tomb Raider and the upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO in an uncertain state.

At Gamescom, Hartmann clarified to IGN that Crystal Dynamics has generally been kept insulated from the happenings with Embracer Group, which suggests that Tomb Raider has experienced minimal impact as a result.

Hartmann stated, “Observers often consider the actions of a parent company, but these actions haven’t affected their resources or management, so things are running smoothly for them.”

Regarding development, Hartmann stated that the task is “tremendously significant” given the esteemed reputation of the franchise.

He mentioned that creating a new Tomb Raider game sets the bar extremely high. As time passes, expectations rise, making it an enormously challenging project. However, things are moving forward well.

From what we’ve been told by the studio during its unveiling, not much is clear about the game. However, it seems as though the boulder is moving, implying that something is happening or progressing.

Previously, the developers behind Tomb Raider felt compelled to assure everyone that their work was not affected by the job cuts at Embracer Group in 2023.

Given two significant shifts in personnel within the parent company, it’s reasonable to contemplate that Lara Croft’s next journey might encounter some difficulties. However, since there’s no set launch date, there’s no immediate need to rectify the situation. Amazon will undoubtedly strive to ensure the game thrives following its upcoming live-action series.
