As a long-time viewer and fan of reality TV shows, I must admit that the potential sale of MGM Alternative, the powerhouse behind many of my favorite unscripted series, has left me feeling somewhat uneasy. The thought of CBS’ Survivor, NBC’s The Voice, ABC’s Shark Tank, Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills potentially changing hands is a bit like hearing that my favorite restaurant might be sold to a chain – it just doesn’t feel right!
Two years following the $8.5 billion purchase of MGM Studios, I find myself contemplating the potential divestment of a significant television asset acquired in that deal, as Amazon explores its options.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the tech titan is considering offloading MGM Alternative, the powerhouse behind beloved unscripted series like CBS’ Survivor, NBC’s The Voice, ABC’s Shark Tank, Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, to name a few. This news has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Multiple potential buyers have expressed interest in the company, but it’s not certain that a transaction will take place. Unscripted TV continues to be a significant part of both traditional broadcasting, cable, and streaming platforms. MGM Alternative boasts several reality TV franchises, many of which were acquired from Mark Burnett, who previously oversaw the division. MGM purchased Burnett’s production company around a decade ago, but he left the company following its acquisition by Amazon.
Besides MGM Alternative, the company also owns Evolution Media, a producer for shows like Vanderpump and Real Housewives, along with Big Fish Entertainment, the creator of On Patrol Live on the Reelz Channel.
If the sale proceeds, it would represent a streamlining of MGM assets following Amazon’s completion of the MGM deal two years ago. Since then, Amazon has been emphasizing franchise-based entertainment across its media branches and Prime Video, as demonstrated by shows like The Lord of the Rings, and live sports, with the acquisition of NBA rights. However, it remains unclear where unscripted content fits into this broader strategy, despite the studio being profitable on its own.
Deadline first reported the interest in selling the company.
