Amazon Prime Italy Betting on Sports, Reality and Romance

Amazon Prime Video is investing heavily in sports, reality shows, and romance genres within Italy. They are set to provide NBA games and introduce several fresh formats, including an Italian adaptation of the popular global competition series “Traitors”, along with a new collection of original series and TV films, primarily focusing on love themes.

At a gathering in Rome on Thursday, Amazon revealed its forthcoming Italian lineup, stating it plans to widen its live sports offerings by offering NBA coverage in Italy starting this autumn. As part of a worldwide media rights contract, Prime Video will broadcast 87 regular NBA games, along with playoff matches such as the NBA Play-In tournament, an annual Conference Finals series, and the NBA Finals in certain years. This expansion builds upon its current agreement to air the UEFA Champions League in Italy until the 2026-27 season. In simpler terms, Amazon is set to show more live sports in Italy, starting with NBA games from this fall, as part of a global deal.

The lineup of unscripted shows features “The Traitors Italia,” a local spin-off of the popular psychological reality competition series, which will premiere with six episodes this fall, hosted by Alessia Marcuzzi. “Holiday Crush,” set to launch in September 2025 and produced by Casta Diva, follows a group of attractive young travelers on an inspiring vacation, with comedy troupe The Jackal observing and commenting throughout. Additional upcoming unscripted programs include the comedic tribute show “Roast in Peace,” as well as new seasons of “Red Carpet – Vip al tappeto” and “LOL: Who’s Laughing Now,” the latter returning for its sixth season and a Halloween special.

On the entertainment side, upcoming productions feature “Ministry of Love”, a fantastical romantic comedy penned and helmed by Giacomo Ciarrapico and Luca Vendruscolo; and “Ancora più Sexy”, a follow-up to “Pensati Sexy” (previously known as “Still Fabulous”), a rom-com centered around a 30-something single who seeks dating advice from adult film star Valentina Nappi. The original lead, Diana Del Bufalo, will reprise her role in the sequel, which will be guided by Michela Andreozzi’s direction.

The company additionally unveiled “Italian Postcards,” an innovative original production penned by Lisa Riccardi and Damiano Bruè, with Jessica Yu (“13 Reasons Why”) helming direction. This fish-out-of-water story centers around Mia, a pampered young New York heiress, who’s dispatched by her grandfather to Palermo without funds or luxuries. Instead, she must work for the family business as a real estate agent. In collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Gaumont Italia, this series will be available on Prime Video globally.

In the array of freshly unveiled films, there were several standouts such as “Not a Country for Singles” (a Felicia Kingsley novel adaptation set in Tuscany), “Love Me, Love Me – Magnetic Hearts” (based on a popular Wattpad series directed by Roger Kumble), and the holiday movie “Mrs. Christmas” featuring Alessandro Gassmann and Luisa Ranieri, produced jointly with Gaumont Italia.
