In early March, director Shekhar Kapur caused a stir online when he accused Amazon Prime Video of altering his 1994 movie ‘Bandit Queen’ significantly. Recently, an Amazon spokesperson addressed this issue, explaining that the version of the film on their platform is what was supplied by the distributors of the film.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to share some insights regarding recent discussions between Shekhar Kapur and Amazon Prime Video. According to my findings, an Amazon Prime Video representative has publicly responded to the claims made by Mr. Kapur.
The version of the movie ‘Bandit Queen’ currently playing on Amazon Prime has not been altered by Amazon. Instead, it’s the version supplied by the film’s distributor, NH Studioz,” is how we might rephrase that statement in a more natural and easy-to-understand manner.
For those less familiar, earlier this month Kapur praised Netflix’s series Adolescence on X. According to him, this British drama series sets a new standard for what a truly exceptional series can accomplish. He pointed out that the show transcends the conventional structure of cause and effect. He highlighted that it immerses viewers deeply into the characters’ minds, offering an opportunity for introspection. In his words, “It’s top-tier storytelling. Watch it.
In response to this, filmmaker Sudhir Mishra expressed his viewpoint that daring storytelling would never be allowed in India. He suggested, “Nobody will allow us to do something like that. It should be done as an independent film, something unique that meanders, pauses, delves, and follows the trail of intrigue.
Currently, Shekhar voiced his displeasure about the streaming service’s presentation of Bandit Queen.
He expressed, “I’m curious, Sudhir Mishra, if OTT platforms would allow me to create #BanditQueen as I did years ago. The version of #BanditQueen on Amazon Prime bears little resemblance to my original film. It has been edited so extensively that it is unrecognizable. Yet, my name remains as the Director. And no one consulted me about it! Are we not entitled to the same respect as Western Directors? Would they dare to edit a Chris Nolan movie without his consent?
Take a look
Similarly, Kunal Kohli, the director of Hum Tum, also commented on the issue, expressing his surprise that changes were made to the film without his consent.
Released in 1994, Bandit Queen was led by Seema Biswas.
