Amazon Touts ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Ratings as Strong, Yet Below First Season

As a die-hard fan who has been following Middle Earth’s epic tales since the very first ring was forged, I must say the latest numbers released by Amazon regarding the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have left me both elated and perplexed!

They shared some audience statistics for the second installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Amazon reports that over 40 million individuals worldwide have tuned in to watch at least part of the initial three episodes from the second season of “The Rings of Power” during its first eleven days. However, they did not specify exactly how much of the season or each episode these 40 million viewers actually watched. It’s important to note that Amazon’s method for counting views differs from the more commonly used streaming view standard, which calculates views by dividing total viewing time by the length of each episode.

Amazon has highlighted that “The Rings of Power” ranks among the top 5 most successful seasons ever on Prime Video, surpassing the performance of other shows within the initial 11 days of their release. Since its comeback, it has consistently held the number one spot for the service.

Based on evaluations by third-party rating agencies, it appears that the number of U.S. households tuning in for the second season’s premiere was significantly lower compared to the show’s initial debut. According to Samba TV, approximately half the number of households watched the second season opener during its first three days on air as compared to the series premiere.

Furthermore, considering that The Rings of Power launched with a staggering production budget of $715 million for its initial season, it’s reasonable to assume that the subsequent episodes should aim to rank among the top five performers on the streaming platform (and ideally even in the top two).

Over the course of its second weekend, our major indicators suggest that we’re looking at another massive success for this season as a staggering 40 million viewers have already tuned in to S2. Notably, since early August, an enormous number of viewers have also watched Season 1. This indicates a significant global appeal for our ‘Rings of Power’, with many of our viewers coming from outside the U.S., demonstrating the show’s connection with international audiences and the expanding customer base of Prime Video worldwide.” – Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, in a memo to her team.

Salke additionally highlighted the comeback of “Reacher”, the successful premiere of “Fallout”‘s first season, the increase in viewership for season 4 of “The Boys”, and the movies “Road House” and “The Concept of You”.
