As a long-time fan of the Yakuza game series, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Amazon Video announced their plans to adapt this iconic franchise into a live-action TV show. The teaser for “Like A Dragon: Yakuza,” released at San Diego Comic-Con, only fueled my anticipation further.
Last month, Amazon Video announced its plans to develop SEGA’s popular Yakuza game series into a live-action TV show. Despite the official name being “Like a Dragon,” the games are commonly known as just “Yakuza.”
At San Diego Comic-Con, the streaming platform revealed the initial sneak peek for its upcoming series, named “Like A Dragon: Yakuza“. The teaser doesn’t provide much detail about the storyline. Instead, it offers brief glimpses into the underworld, accompanied by close-up shots of people getting tattooed. In these scenes, viewers catch a glimpse of an opulent party, piles of money, and a man preparing for battle.
The story unfolds in the timeframe between 1995 and 2005, centering around Kazuma Kiryu, portrayed by Ryoma Takeuchi, and his thrilling experiences within the fictional Kamurochō district, modeled after Japan’s red light areas. Exciting news from Comic-Con reveals that Takeuchi will collaborate with Kaku Kento in this production, with Kento playing the role of Akira Nishikiyama – a former friend of Kiryu who later joins an opposing gang.
Check out the preview for “Like a Dragon: Yakuza” above. The initial three episodes of this series will be released on the streaming platform starting October 24.
