The cost of AMC A-List, like many other items, has gone up. But this increase may prove beneficial in the long run for cinema enthusiasts. In turbulent economic times, movies serve as a comforting escape; historically, going to the movies has been a less expensive form of entertainment. However, ticket costs have significantly risen over the last ten years, while average American earnings have generally remained static, making staying home to watch movies a more budget-friendly choice. Cinemas are actively trying to lure audiences back, and AMC A-List is one of the top contenders for this task.
According to a recent announcement (from Variety), AMC is increasing the cost of AMC A-List memberships as of May 7, 2025. The new price will be $27.99 per month in all AMC theaters across the country, while it will be $25.99 per month everywhere except New York and California. This is a $2 increase from the previous monthly rate of $24.95 for all AMC theaters and $22.95 for locations outside of California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. However, unlike other subscription services that simply raise prices without offering additional benefits, AMC A-List members will now receive an extra movie reservation, allowing them to book four movies per week instead of three.
The subscription plan continues to provide access to all high-end movie formats such as IMAX, 3D, and Dolby, with an added bonus – individuals aged 13 or above are now eligible to subscribe for the A-List service. On a related note, AMC’s CEO, Adam Aaron, has announced a price adjustment for this plan.
For the first time in years, we’re raising our prices, but let me assure you that an A-List membership remains a fantastic value. In fact, after this adjustment, the cost of an A-List subscription will often be lower than what you’d pay as a non-member to see two movies each month. This is particularly true if you enjoy our premium movie formats or purchase tickets online. We truly value your commitment to experiencing films on the big screens at AMC, and we’re excited to enhance the benefits of an A-List membership even further.
The AMC A-List service debuted on June 26, 2018, priced at $19.95 monthly for viewing up to three films per week. This service entered the market to rival MoviePass, which provided daily movie access for just $9.99 a month. Unfortunately, this attractive offer proved unsustainable, and within a year of its announcement, MoviePass faced collapse. In its wake, AMC A-List emerged as a popular choice among film enthusiasts. It has since become an essential part of the cinematic community, alongside tracking films on Letterboxd, and viewers often cheer upon viewing the Nicole Kidman advertisement before an AMC movie.
AMC A-List Is a Great Investment for Moviegoers
Considering a $30 monthly fee for a subscription service may seem steep for an individual, but it’s a smart move for someone who frequently visits the movies. For instance, if you were to catch an IMAX showing of Captain America: Brave New World at 7PM in Los Angeles on its opening night, the ticket price alone would be $28.68 after accounting for the $2.69 ticket fee. This is only slightly cheaper than the cost of an AMC A-List subscription. By investing in this subscription service, one could save money in the long run, as it effectively covers the cost of a premium-format ticket like the one mentioned above. Moreover, with an A-List subscription, you’re more likely to watch multiple movies throughout the month, rather than spending all your money on a single blockbuster. This not only saves you money but also provides support for smaller films that might otherwise be overlooked in favor of popular ones.
The extra fourth spot for reserving movie tickets with the AMC A-List is an attractive bonus considering the price increase, as it allows viewers to watch up to 16 movies per month if they wish, more than offsetting the cost of the service. This contrasts starkly with Netflix, which recently boosted its standard monthly fee to $17 without additional benefits and charges almost $10 extra for an additional user on an ad-free plan. The AMC A-List price rise will take effect at the start of the summer movie season, mere days after the release of Thunderbolts. Given the influx of high-profile blockbusters such as Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Jurassic World: Rebirth, 28 Years Later, M3GAN 2.0, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – a $30 subscription for unlimited viewings of these movies, potentially multiple times in premium formats, appears to be a more worthwhile investment compared to Netflix’s monthly $20 fee for their latest original movie.
