As a long-time theater enthusiast who has been through the highs and lows of Broadway shows and movie premieres, I can confidently say that the impending release of “Wicked” is causing quite a stir – and not just because of the incredible cast and visual effects. The anticipation for this film has reached an all-time high, with fans eagerly awaiting the opportunity to immerse themselves in the magical world of Oz once more.
Anticipation swirls around the upcoming release of the movie version of Wicked, and in anticipation, AMC Theatres has issued a fresh ad as a gentle reminder that humming along during the film isn’t appropriate. For years, fans have cherished the tunes from this hit Broadway musical, but with Wicked‘s promising box-office prospects and stellar reviews, some are both excited for and apprehensive about audience members singing along to the movie.
AMC Theatres, through Vice, has revealed a pre-movie announcement emphasizing that audience members should refrain from singing along during films. This brief 30-second advertisement, which showcases clips from the musical film Wicked and is narrated by Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard of Oz in the production, advises viewers, “At AMC Theatres, silence speaks volumes. No chatting. No typing. No serenading. No mourning. No flirting. And under no circumstances, name-calling. Immerse yourself in the wonder of cinema.” Ryan Noonan, a representative for AMC, made a statement to The Indianapolis Star via email.
At AMC, there’s a traditionally strict rule against disturbing conduct. The introductory WICKED pre-show clip serves as an enjoyable and entertaining nudge to cinema patrons, encouraging them to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the movie by not disrupting others’ experience.
Ahead of time, AMC Theatres recognized the need for this advertisement, as some of their locations have been showing it before movies for roughly a month. There have been reports of moviegoers singing during advance screenings, causing discomfort among other viewers. Despite Universal Pictures remaining silent on the matter of inappropriate singing, they’ve confirmed that Wicked sing-along screenings will be available around Christmas, giving fans two major holiday weekends to enjoy the movie. One screening will be without singing, while the other will allow fans to sing their favorite songs aloud.
Don’t Sing During the Movie
The discussion around whether it is appropriate to sing during a popular movie with iconic songs is a relatively recent phenomenon. There was no genuine concern about this when 2017’s Beauty and the Beast or 2021’s West Side Story hit theaters. Yet in 2023, AMC Theatres and many other chains allowed moviegoers to sing and dance for both Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé – within reason. It is a little understandable with concert films, as there isn’t a narrative an audience member is distracted from, and the film is designed to resemble a concert, where fans sing along. But a movie theater has more in common with a Broadway show, and if you wouldn’t sing along during a Broadway show, then you shouldn’t sing during a movie because it would be rude to disrupt other audience members.
As a film enthusiast, I appreciate AMC’s attempt to discourage audience members from singing during movies, but I’m not sure how effective this campaign will be. After all, we’ve had reminders for years about turning off phones during films, yet many still persist in texting or even recording clips, often with the intention of sharing them online. The issue of theater etiquette is a hot topic among film buffs, and disruptive behavior is one of the main reasons why some viewers opt to wait for big releases on streaming platforms instead of attending the cinema. With Wicked promising to be one of the most anticipated films this year, it’s crucial that we all remember to consider our fellow moviegoers when we attend screenings.
