Today, the broader community connected to the hit show American Idol is grieving following the unexpected death of its long-term music supervisor, Robin Kaye. Tragically, Robin was discovered dead alongside her husband Thomas DeLuca in their Encino residence on Monday (July 15).
Kaye has been a part of the music industry for many years, having worked at record labels such as MTM, MCA, and PolyGram. She even held positions where she licensed music for films and television. In 2009, she joined the team and now holds the title of the longest-serving music supervisor in the show’s 24-year history. Over approximately 300 episodes, she has been instrumental in securing rights to broadcast thousands of songs – from finalist performances to group numbers to weekly themes for “home week”.
Certainly, Kaye played a crucial role in persuading Led Zeppelin to permit Adam Lambert to perform “Whole Lotta Love” on Season 8, which was actually the first time a cover of their classic rock hit had been performed by another artist. In a 2009 interview, Kaye revealed the strategy she employed to secure the band’s approval for the song. She said, “I suggested, ‘Now is the perfect moment to consider it. If you’re ever going to attempt it, this is the time.’ I’m not sure if Robert Plant was aware, but his manager was because his kids were big Adam fans and they watched the show in England.
Kaye was still working on the coming season of Idol at the time of her death.
The Hollywood Reporter contacted numerous contestants who had been mentored by Kaye during her 16-season tenure on the production team.
These expressions of sympathy, often employing words like “kind” and “calm,” are frequent in the eulogies penned by the contestants deeply affected by her passing.
Robin played a significant role in my triumph on the show. She’s the one who ensured that I could perform ‘Falling Slowly’ and ‘Heartless.’ She tirelessly worked to clear the song I felt at ease singing each week. Beyond that, she was always so compassionate and considerate. The show was demanding, but the compassionate individuals behind the scenes made it bearable. Robin stood out among them. And even after the show ended, she continued to be a source of comfort. My sympathies are with her and her husband’s families during this difficult time.”
– Kris Allen, Season 8 winner
During my time on American Idol, I encountered numerous remarkable individuals, but Robin was the one who left a lasting impression. We connected instantly, and she showed me kindness as if I were her own son. She empathized with the pressures of the competition, particularly when it came to song selection. Each interaction with her felt significant. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to rejoin American Idol last year to promote the Broadway show A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical. Robin was among the first to text me expressing joy over my return, and she wasted no time in planning which songs I would perform. She will be deeply missed. This loss is almost unbearable, a tragedy beyond words. – Nick Fradiani, Season 14 winner and star of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical
As a gamer immersed in the competition of American Idol, I had the privilege of forging a close bond with Robin. Our interactions were so frequent that it seemed like we chatted daily, given her significant role within the show. We’d often share a chuckle because she’d catch me trying to eke out a few more minutes after a performance, particularly when she was already inquiring about my upcoming song selection, sometimes even before I had confirmation of making it to the next round. Robin was always one step ahead, yet she led with compassion, doing everything in her power to guide and bolster us during our rollercoaster journey through this transformative period in our lives.
Robin played such a significant role in my musical journey, and I owe much of my personal growth during that time to her. She challenged me, inspired me, and helped transform me into the artist I am today. She was a strong advocate, particularly for artists like myself who didn’t always conform to the usual standards. She made you feel understood and valued while always being genuine.
Rayvon Owen, from Season 14, expresses his heartfelt gratitude for recently reuniting with Robin at the finale of this past season’s ‘Idol’. He shares his affection and longing for her, and they reminisced about the joyous occasion when Jamal, the first black male winner since Ruben Studdard, was crowned. As a fellow black singer, Rayvon cherishes Robin’s respect, love, and constant encouragement throughout his journey. He acknowledges the significant impact she had on his career and will forever be thankful for her kindness and support. The tragic loss of Robin’s husband has left him heartbroken, and he extends his deepest condolences to their family, loved ones, and the ‘Idol’ family. Hollywood will seem less vibrant without her shining presence.

As a gamer putting on my Idol cap, let me share my heartfelt sorrow over the shocking news about Robin Kaye and her husband’s untimely demise. Working alongside Robin was nothing short of a delight. Her tranquil demeanor and warm, caring eyes left an indelible mark. She made me feel as if we were old friends or family, a connection that felt like it spanned a lifetime.
Robin tirelessly worked to help bring my dreams to life, securing approval for songs I deeply resonated with so I could perform them on Idol. (Remember the thrill of getting the green light from Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to sing Led Zeppelin’s ‘What Is and What Should Never Be’? The memory of being in her presence still feels vivid.)
I count myself incredibly fortunate to have shared that unique time with her. My heart goes out to Robin, her husband, and their loved ones. May they find peace.
I, along with my family, are deeply saddened by the passing of Robin Kaye. She was a genuine advocate for artists, someone who genuinely cared about them. Her compassionate heart always shone through, and she remained a friend even after our time together on the show ended. Robin was a significant supporter in my journey to the top 10, and her faith in my talent played a crucial role in bringing many of my performances, including Katy Perry’s ‘Unconditionally,’ to life. That performance was particularly meaningful because Robin stood behind it. J-Lo appreciated how I reimagined the song, and Robin backed that choice. That experience holds a special place in my heart, and I owe it largely to Robin’s vision and support. She was more than just an exceptional music supervisor; she was a quiet powerhouse behind some of Idol‘s most memorable moments, and a truly radiant spirit. Robin had the unique ability to make artists feel seen and valued, not just as performers, but as individuals. Her kindness, her wisdom, and her unwavering encouragement have left an indelible mark on countless careers and hearts. She will be deeply missed, and words cannot express our sorrow. Thank you, Robin, for believing in me, for caring about me, and for giving so much of yourself. Your legacy endures in the music and in all of us who were fortunate enough to know you.” – Olivia Rox, Season 15
Even though it’s been a while since we last communicated, I recall Robin as someone who was incredibly kind and supportive during my time on Idol. She put in countless hours to make sure our songs were cleared and her contributions behind the scenes were vital. Her kindness and hard work will truly be missed.” – Pia Toscano, Season 10
Each week during our performances where we’d present our chosen songs to the producers for the upcoming show, Robin was like a luminous guide. The room would be filled with these renowned professionals who’ve listened to every contestant from Carrie Underwood to Adam Lambert. You’d give your best, knowing they were there to find flaws, and it was hard not to feel intimidated. Yet, amidst the terror, Robin’s eyes would shine brightly. Sitting near the door with her notepad, she would always greet you with a warm smile, her eyebrows lifting as if to encourage, ‘You’re doing well! Keep going! I adore this song!’ Although she’s no longer here, that smile remains etched in my memory.” – Clark Beckham, Season 14
Jessica Meuse, from Season 13 of American Idol, expressed her deep sadness upon hearing the news about Robin, who was more than just a music supervisor – she was a friend. During her time on the show, Robin provided song suggestions and guidance, but what Jessica valued most was Robin’s willingness to continue their conversations long after the show ended. They would discuss different career paths Jessica could take in the music industry while maintaining sustainability. Robin didn’t have to do this, yet she made time for Jessica anyway. Their musical chats on American Idol were meaningful, and at crucial elimination rounds, it was often one of Robin’s song recommendations that kept Jessica on the show. Jessica emphasized the need for more individuals like Robin and expressed her disbelief over the negativity in someone’s heart to harm such a kind person.”
– Jessica Meuse (Season 13)
I’m deeply saddened to learn about my friend Robin. While I try not to have favorites, Robin truly stood out during my time on American Idol. She was quick to understand and always advocated for the artist’s desires. Her presence greatly enhanced my experience on the show, making it a memory I will cherish forever.
– Colton Dixon, Season 11
Didi Benami, from Season 9, will forever cherish Robin as one of the most tranquil and compassionate figures on set. She was an expert in music rights acquisition, known for her thoughtfulness, tenacity, and high regard within her profession. I’ll never forget when she managed to secure the rights for Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rhiannon’, a song that had never been used on American Idol before – a moment that held great significance for me. That experience was incredibly meaningful, and it wouldn’t have transpired without her. After the show, I shared a dinner with Robin and her husband at their home in Toluca Lake. The evening was serene, and they were such welcoming and gracious hosts. Their love for music was palpable, and Robin’s eyes sparkled when we met their parrot. It was one of those evenings that leaves a lasting impression. I am devastated to learn of Robin’s passing, feeling shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. Robin and her husband were kind-hearted souls – the kind of people who wouldn’t harm anyone. They didn’t deserve this. My sympathies are with their family and loved ones, and I hope justice is served.”
– Didi Benami, Season 9
Robin excelled at her role. Given my visual impairment, navigating tasks like acquiring music or swiftly researching new tunes for performance presented unique challenges. Robin simplified these processes for me and was consistently ready to go the extra step. She aided not just myself, but many others on our musical expeditions.”
– Scott MacIntyre, Season 8
Robin was a remarkably kind soul whose calm demeanor and warmth left an indelible impression on me. During my time on Idol, we spoke regularly, and it was through her that I had the opportunity to perform one of my favorite songs, ‘Somos Novios.’ This wasn’t a song initially approved for performance, but Robin tirelessly advocated for its inclusion. If not for her efforts, I wouldn’t have dared to sing Beyoncé in Spanish. She also managed to clear ‘Oye,’ the Spanish version of ‘Listen’ from Dreamgirls. Years later, I was fortunate enough to collaborate with her when I served as a vocal coach during Hollywood Week. Even after all this time, Robin maintained her tranquil and comforting energy that our team needed to execute our duties seamlessly, allowing the contestants to express their musical preferences. I am grateful for having known her and aspire to emulate her impact. It’s hard to find anyone who could speak ill of her or her character. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for inspiring those around her.” – Devin Velez, Season 12
In our conversations, we mainly discussed the songs I planned to perform on the show. She was consistently kind, considerate, and modest. She made every effort to secure approval for the songs we preferred, but if she encountered a ‘no,’ she swiftly found backup options for us. Her passing has left me in shock; it’s a heart-wrenching loss not only for me but for the entire Idol community.”
– Danny Gokey, Season 8
As a devoted fan, I had the privilege of witnessing Robin’s exceptional work on American Idol, where Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick were the executive producers when she joined the production staff. As Lythgoe put it to The Hollywood Reporter, “Robin was a delight to collaborate with.” She would always come up with alternative song suggestions if she couldn’t secure the rights to a particular piece of music for a contestant.
Warwick also shared his appreciation, stating, “Robin was a pleasure to work with. Despite the challenging and chaotic nature of the job, she consistently delivered top-notch results. Even in the midst of weekly live television show stress, Robin always maintained a friendly and pleasant demeanor. My thoughts are with her family during this tough time; she will be deeply missed.”
“We are heartbroken to learn about Robin and her husband Tom’s passing. Since 2009, Robin has been a cherished member of the Idol family, admired and respected by everyone who crossed paths with her. Robin will forever remain in our hearts, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this trying period.
