Amid Drake Legal War, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Hits 1 Billion Streams on Spotify

Kendrick Lamar’s controversial hit song “Not Like Us” has surpassed a billion listens on Spotify.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel like I’ve just leveled up in the world of music after my latest hit song joined an elite group known as Spotify’s Billions Club. This exclusive clique is only for tracks that have surpassed 1 billion streams on the platform, and I’m proud to be in such esteemed company. The likes of The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Tyler the Creator are already members, and I can’t wait to see who else will join us in this streaming success story.

Lamar’s song “Not Like Us” is one of several diss tracks he has put out against the artist known as Certified Lover Boy. Prior to this, Lamar had released “euphoria,” followed by “meet the grahams” a day before “Not Like Us.

In 2024, the song soared to fame, sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and ruling the Hot Rap Songs chart for 20 weeks. This popular hit has earned five Grammy Award nominations, including those for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It evolved beyond just a diss track, resonating globally as an anthem of culture.

Universal Music Group (UMG), the record label shared by both Drake and Kendrick Lamar, is facing a defamation lawsuit filed by Drake. The lawsuit alleges that UMG intentionally created and disseminated a rap track as a viral hit, which contained accusations implying that Drake is a criminal pedophile and inciting the public to take violent action against him.

In November last year, Drake’s company, Frozen Moments, made a complaint to a court in New York, accusing Universal Music Group (UMG) of intentionally promoting the song “Not Like Us” across streaming platforms and radio stations to make it popular. The strategy, they claimed, involved the use of automated programs (bots) and pay-to-play deals. However, both Spotify and UMG have denied these allegations, with UMG stating that the accusations are false and insulting.

UMG and Spotify have never entered into an agreement where UMG gave Spotify a 30% discount on licensing fees for ‘Not Like Us’, in return for Spotify actively promoting the song, such as suggesting it to users searching for similar songs and artists,” Spotify stated following the petition.
