Without a doubt, if you reflect on the top crime dramas from the past ten years, I’m guessing The Blacklist is one of the first series that pops into your head. Among its fascinating characters, Amir Arison’s portrayal of Aram Mojtabai stands out, gracing our screens for nine seasons. Although The Blacklist has concluded its run on NBC, Arison has transitioned to a new TV role in the streaming world… interestingly enough, it also involves law enforcement – a twist he didn’t anticipate.
The Apple TV+ series titled “Dope Thief” premiered on its schedule on March 14, 2025. This intriguing series was developed by Peter Craig and features Arison portraying Mark Nader, a DEA supervisor tasked with locating the character Ray (played by Brian Tyree Henry). In an interview before the first two episodes were released on streaming platforms, I asked Arison if he had anticipated transitioning from one government role to another after his notable role in the network TV show “The Blacklist.
The actor candidly admitted that he hadn’t anticipated this, but compared his departure from The Blacklist to the feeling of graduation.
It turned out to be quite thrilling when I found myself stepping into another stint as a law enforcement officer, despite the fact that Aram was an FBI agent and this is the DEA. There’s a significant distinction between the two, but the opportunity to switch from being a student to becoming the teacher was intriguing. Aram was essentially the eager apprentice, always striving to impress and perform well. Now, I (Mark) have transitioned into the role of the one who frequently says ‘no’.
The actor from “Dope Thief” went on, expressing that it seemed fitting to assume the part since Mark is essentially the polar opposite of Aram’s character. Consequently, even though there were some shared traits, it was delightful to portray a distinct individual instead.
Aram consistently aimed to maintain a positive atmosphere. Conversely, Mark shows no inclination towards this at all. Over time, I found it gratifying and seemed fitting to assume this role. In essence, I feel as if I grew up watching Aram on television. As I matured, I gained expertise, self-assurance, maturity, and happiness, which I was able to pour into Dope Thief.
Arison doesn’t mean it as a joke when he points out that Mark is essentially the polar opposite of Aram. Throughout “The Blacklist,” Aram has often been a beacon of hope in the show, and Mark on “Dope Thief” certainly isn’t like that. He’s known for his straight-forwardness and will go to great lengths to achieve what he wants.

It’s wonderful to see him back in a similar role, as he temporarily left “The Blacklist” after nine seasons to star in a Broadway play, which meant we missed him in Season 10. He appeared only as a guest, joining the list of cast members who departed over time. Fans of his network TV show will surely enjoy seeing Amir Arison in his new role as another law enforcer in his streaming series follow-up.
The thrilling series “Dope Thief” truly pushes its protagonist to the limit and offers a rollercoaster of excitement from start to finish. It’s a must-watch for me every week, and if you’re keen on seeing Arison in his latest DEA role, don’t miss out on “Dope Thief”. Subscribe to Apple TV+ to catch it!
