Aamir Khan’s film “Lagaan” (2001) continues to shine as an ageless masterpiece and a significant milestone in Indian cinema, captivating audiences even years after its release. Recently, director Ashutosh Gowariker disclosed that prior to Amitabh Bachchan agreeing to narrate the movie, he cautioned Aamir that every film Big B had lent his voice to had failed. Fortunately, Big B’s ‘caution’ didn’t materialize, and “Lagaan” transformed into a beloved cult classic instead.
On Aamir Khan’s YouTube channel, Ashutosh Gowariker narrated an intriguing backstage tale about convincing Amitabh Bachchan to become the film’s narrator. Gowariker disclosed that Bachchan didn’t immediately agree and even gave a warning. According to the director, Bachchan told Khan, “Whenever I provide voiceover for a film, that movie doesn’t succeed. It flops. If you’re prepared to take that risk, then go ahead, but remember I warned you earlier.
Luckily, Aamir Khan remained unfazed by the situation. Instead, he playfully dismissed it, shared the movie with Big B, and when he appreciated the innovative storytelling approach, he consented to provide the narration. From that point onwards, the events that followed became a part of history.
Additionally in that same interview, director Ashutosh Gowariker revealed how Amitabh Bachchan’s voice significantly transformed the start of Lagaan, enhancing its storytelling and imbuing it with life. The narration by Big B acted as a potent gateway into the film’s realm.
In the past, during an interview with India Today, Aamir Khan shared some fascinating insights about Javed Akhtar’s cautionary words before the making of Lagaan. He elaborated on the film’s rural backdrop, the employment of Awadhi dialect, and even Amitabh Bachchan’s voiceover, expressing his apprehension that these elements might be too daring. As a die-hard fan, I can only imagine the thrill of hearing such behind-the-scenes tales from one of my all-time favorite actors!
Currently, on the professional side of things, Aamir Khan is readying himself for the premiere of his upcoming movie titled Sitaare Zameen Par. This project was initially unveiled in October of last year. In this production, directed by RS Prasanna, Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary, and Genelia Deshmukh are featured in significant roles. Drawing inspiration from the 2018 Spanish film Champions, Sitaare Zameen Par is slated to grace the cinemas on June 20, 2025.
