As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood-Bollywood dynamics, I find myself deeply moved by the heartwarming tale of camaraderie and loyalty that unfolded between Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra. The story of Mohabbatein, set against the backdrop of the 90s Bollywood era, is a testament to the value placed on personal relationships in the industry during those times.
In the late ’90s, Amitabh Bachchan, once known as the “angry young man” of the ’70s, faced a difficult time in his acting career. However, Yash Chopra’s film Mohabbatein served as a beacon of hope for him during this period. Interestingly, Nikkhil Advani, the filmmaker, shared that Amitabh changed only one rupee for taking part in Mohabbatein. This was because Yash Chopra, who directed the movie, offered him the same amount he had asked for the film Silsila back in 1981.
During the 90s, Nikkhil Advani started his journey in Bollywood and had a front-row seat to the creation of several significant films from that time. In a recent conversation with Mirchi, he reminisced about how relationships and bonds were highly valued within the industry back then. To illustrate this, he referred to the strong bond between Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra as a prime example.
In 1981, Yash Chopra inquired about the salary Amitabh Bachchan, at the pinnacle of his career, desired for the movie. At that moment, Bachchan, who aspired to purchase a home, expressed this wish to the filmmaker and requested a fair compensation, which Chopra granted.
After encountering a difficult period in his career and experiencing financial struggles, the megastar agreed to work with the filmmaker on Mohabbatein. However, when Chopra inquired about his desired payment, Big B simply requested one rupee, symbolizing the assistance the filmmaker had provided during Silsila.
Advani reminisced, “During Mohabbatein, when Yash asked Amit about his fee, Amit replied, ‘You fulfilled my request in the past; this time, I’ll make the movie for just one rupee.’ Indeed, he did it for a single rupee.
Nikkhil outlined how this action symbolized the importance of loyalty and interpersonal connections in the business world. Additionally, he highlighted that in current times, it’s all about making calculated decisions.
Beyond that, I can’t help but reminisce about the enchanting ambiance on the Yash Raj Films set, where the legendary Yash Chopra’s beloved wife, Pamela, would graciously cook for all of us. She’d take the time to inquire about any dietary restrictions we might have and carefully craft menus that made each production, from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to Mohabbatein, a culinary delight as well as a cinematic one.
In the year 2000, Aditya Chopra’s film “Mohabbatein,” produced by Yash Chopra, was one of the top-earning movies. Besides Amitabh Bachchan, it starred Shah Rukh Khan, Uday Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Jimmy Shergill, Jugal Hansraj and others in prominent roles.
