As a seasoned cinephile who’s witnessed the evolution of comedy since the dawn of VHS tapes, I am thrilled to announce that Amy Schumer’s latest project, “Kinda Pregnant,” is set to grace our screens on Feb 5, 2025. This film, directed by Tyler Spindel and produced by none other than Adam Sandler, promises a unique blend of humor, heartfelt moments, and a healthy dose of the unexpected.
Following several setbacks that sparked doubts about the project’s completion, Amy Schumer’s upcoming comedy “Kinda Pregnant” has finally been given a release date. This production has been in the works since 2023 and is now scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix on February 5, 2025.
Under the direction of Tyler Spindel, who has a history of work on Netflix productions like “The Out-Laws” and “The Wrong Missy“, and produced by Schumer herself along with Adam Sandler and his team, the film “Kinda Pregnant” follows the story of Lainy, a teacher who becomes envious of her best friend’s pregnancy. In an attempt to belong, she starts wearing a fake baby bump, but faces complications when she unexpectedly encounters the man she admires. Due to its adult content, frequent profanity, drug use, and sexual themes, the film is expected to receive an R-rating on Netflix. However, don’t be misled by this rating as Spindel himself refers to it as a “comedy enthusiast’s dream while still being emotionally resonant.
Schumer, along with Julie Paiva, co-wrote the film and made significant script changes during production. As a fun fact, she mentioned that there were no sex scenes in the original draft before her involvement. However, the core message of “Kinda Pregnant” remained consistent due to her revisions. Schumer expressed pride in collaborating with Paiva and stated they shared the same vision for the project. The cast includes Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Damon Wayans Jr., Lizzie Broadway, and Joel David Moore.
Not Your Traditional Rom-Com
Amy Schumer is renowned for her groundbreaking comedy, making it no wonder that Kinda Pregnant stands out a bit. As Schumer explains, the movie puts an unusual focus on female friendships – something quite uncommon in traditional romantic comedies. In this story, Schumer’s character Lainy is surrounded by a tight-knit group of supportive and endearing women throughout her ups and downs. These relationships are so significant that Schumer felt uncomfortable labeling Kinda Pregnant strictly as a romantic comedy. “I believe the romance is there,” she said, “but the main message for me is about discovering self-love through friendships and appreciating your friends deeply.” This dynamic extends to Schumer’s relationship with her co-stars off-camera, which she described after filming as “remarkably close.
Interestingly, Amy Schumer hasn’t shied away from portraying the challenges of expectant mothers on screen before – in fact, back in 2019, she filmed an HBO Max special detailing her efforts to juggle a stand-up tour alongside her own pregnancy. Not many comedies delve into such sensitive subjects, which makes Schumer’s production all the more unique. “Everyone has their own story when it comes to deciding whether or not to become a parent, or dealing with fertility issues, and I felt that this was an excellent way to address those themes,” she stated.
Kinda Pregnant will officially hit Netflix on Feburary 5th, 2025.
