As a dedicated follower of short films and a proud supporter of filmmakers who use this medium to tell captivating stories, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming HollyShorts Festival in London! The fact that it’s part of their 20th anniversary year makes it even more special.
One of the world’s most prestigious short film festivals, HollyShorts, is coming to London.
For the very first time, HollyShorts will organize its London edition during the 20th anniversary year, and The Hollywood Reporter has exclusive news that this event will bestow HollyShorts Honoree Awards on numerous short filmmakers from Britain and Ireland who have been nominated or won Oscars.
Honorands of the HollyShorts Honoree Award consist of Tom Berkeley and Ross White, winners of the Oscar in 2023 for their short film “An Irish Goodbye”; Chris Overton, who received an Oscar in 2018 for “The Silent Child”; Misan Harriman, this year’s Academy Award nominee for “The After”; and Jamie Donoughue, a 2016 nominee for “Shok”.
The event will also bestow a Trailblazer Award upon actor James Martin, who made history as the first individual with Down Syndrome to win an Academy Award due to his significant role in “An Irish Goodbye”. Earlier this year, Martin was recognized with the MBE — Member of the Order of the British Empire — for his outstanding contributions to drama in the King’s New Year’s Honours List.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that last year, the HollyShorts Film Festival earned its fourth Oscar-qualifying award for documentary shorts. This year, something extraordinary happened – the festival was also recognized by BAFTA! This accreditation means that films chosen for HollyShorts now have the opportunity to be submitted for the BAFTA awards. It’s a remarkable feat, considering that past winners like Riz Ahmed’s The Long Goodbye and Guy Nattiv’s Skin have already made history by taking top honors in the shorts categories at the Academy Awards. The journey of HollyShorts continues to inspire us all!
The Honoree Awards and Trailblazer Award will be personally handed out during the opening-night event of HollyShorts London on December 6th. The complete London festival will take place from the 6th to the 8th of December.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that some fantastic companies have supported HollyShorts London this year. These include Cotrini Skin, Kodak, Panavision, JeanBookNerd, Miller Insurance, Company 3, Alta Global Media, 88th Street Productions, Shotdeck, IMGN, and Kevork Law. Their backing means we can bring you an even better event!
