As a die-hard NCIS fan with over a decade of investment in the franchise, I must say that the title “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” is a breath of fresh air. After years of waiting for these two dynamic characters to share the screen again, simplicity is indeed a welcome change.
Fans of NCIS have enjoyed occasional appearances by Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly after they left the main cast. Recently, Ziva (Cote de Pablo) featured in the Season 16 finale and returned for Season 17, while DiNozzo (Weatherly) made a surprise appearance in a Ducky tribute episode earlier this year. Now, it’s time for Tony and Ziva to lead their own stories in the NCIS universe, as their spinoff series NCIS: Tony & Ziva is currently filming abroad and set to air on the 2025 TV schedule. Since its announcement in May, there have been mixed opinions about the show’s title, but Weatherly shared a fan’s reasoning for why it’s “fantastic,” and I can’t disagree with their logic.
The discussion about this particular subject arose during a chat between Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, and NCIS writer Jesse Stern on their podcast “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch”. While Weatherly reminisced about the relationship that Tony and Ziva developed on the main series (which reportedly started when de Pablo felt that he was attempting to undermine her audition), he reflected back on this experience.
The other day in Boston, I encountered a 22-year-old woman who was quite excited about the latest NCIS: Tony and Ziva series. When I asked her opinion on the title, she replied enthusiastically, “It’s amazing! It says exactly what it is – Tony and Ziva. If you’re familiar with Tony and Ziva, then it’s the perfect title because that’s what you’re looking for. You know, sometimes you just want a pastrami sandwich, and you don’t need to call it something else. Just call it a pastrami sandwich.
Last month, I shared my thoughts that “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” wasn’t quite fitting for the spinoff. Instead, I proposed a title change to “NCIS: Tony, Ziva and Tali,” considering how pivotal their daughter, portrayed by Isla Gee, is in the storyline. More recently, it was brought up that the title “NCIS” might not be appropriate for this series since Tony and Ziva won’t be affiliated with the NCIS agency. To be fair, I believe the same argument could also apply to “NCIS: Origins,” as it was initially known as NIS back in 1991.
And yet, this woman who ran into Michael Weatherly makes a good point: if what you’re looking is a show about Tony and Ziva, then why overcomplicate the title? This is an NCIS franchise show, and for those who liked watching Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo’s character together for eight seasons, they know exactly what this spinoff has to offer. It’s simple and gets the job done. Weatherly didn’t say if this fan managed to change his mind, but I’m definitely in agreement with her.
As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming spin-off of NCIS, focusing on Tony and Ziva, will find them evading their pursuers across Europe. The intrigue intensifies as they race against time to uncover who’s behind the attack on Tony’s security company. Unlike its predecessors, this NCIS spin-off will break new ground by streaming exclusively on Paramount+, marking a departure from CBS. Keep an eye on TopMob for further insights into what this series has in store!
