At Caesar’s Palace’s Colosseum, Ana de Armas was the spotlight during CinemaCon’s Action Star of the Year ceremony. It was then that this Academy Award-nominated actress confided that she had another action star captivating her thoughts: Keanu Reeves.
10 years ago, when I barely knew English after moving to L.A., the actress recalled her history with Keanu, saying, “I first met him in Santiago de Chile during lunch with the team behind our film Knock Knock. Across the table from this legendary actor, Keanu Reeves, I was filled with nerves, just as one would be. My English skills were shaky, and I found it difficult to engage in conversation, fearing my language abilities wouldn’t measure up.
In 2015, I had the pleasure of watching Eli Roth’s gripping psychological thriller, where I found myself in the shoes of a family man, much like myself, portrayed by Keanu Reeves. In this movie, I welcomed two unexpected visitors to my home while my wife was away. These young women seemed harmless at first, but as the plot thickened, they revealed themselves to be far more complex than initially perceived, leading us all into a chilling game with deadly stakes. Ana de Armas was one of these intriguing characters.
Regarding that dinner, the filmmakers discussed Reeves’ career with him and the topic of his legendary action movie, “The Matrix”, arose. He inquired if I had watched it, to which I responded negatively. Everyone at the table was taken aback, so someone explained to me in Spanish, “You haven’t seen ‘La Matrix’?” I replied, “Oh ‘La Matrix’. Yes, I’ve seen that one.” That moment will never cease to be embarrassing for me.
The discussion delved into the topic of “John Wick,” another action series that Reeves contributed to popularizing through his impressive stunts. As he stood up from his seat, he began performing one of the choreographies, possibly the one in the bathhouse scene [from the initial film]. He seemed to recall each man he had killed in that particular scene and reenacted it for us. I found myself utterly captivated by him. He appeared so joyful and eager about this movie he had just completed, and his enthusiasm was infectious.
In about ten years, de Armas found herself accepting the Action Star of the Year trophy during the Big Screen Achievement Awards’ closing night at CinemaCon. This recognition came as de Armas was promoting her upcoming film, a spin-off of the John Wick franchise titled Ballerina, in Las Vegas. Notably, Keanu Reeves also plays a role in this Len Wiseman-directed movie. The Ballerina film wouldn’t have existed without John Wick, and it’s safe to say that there would be no John Wick without Keanu Reeves.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the graceful ballerina, Ana de Armas, was honored with the Action Star of the Year award at CinemaCon. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, she dedicated this recognition to none other than the incredible Keanu Reeves. What an inspiring moment for all of us who appreciate their exceptional talents!
