As a special needs parent myself, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for Gus Walz and his family. The DNC moment where he expressed his love for his father was not just a political statement, it was a beautiful display of human emotion that should be celebrated, not mocked.
Host of the Democratic National Convention, Ana Navarro, criticized Ann Coulter for making fun of Gus Walz, a 17-year-old boy who is the son of the Democratic vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz.
Back in Chicago during the third night of the DNC, I found myself trending after an emotional moment with my family. On stage, while accepting the nomination for vice president, Walz turned to look at us – Hope, Gus (that’s me), and Mom, Gwen. With a heartfelt gaze, he declared, “Hope, Gus, and Gwen, you are my universe, and I adore you all.”
As the camera focused on them, rivers of tears streamed down the children’s cheeks. This sight deeply touched Gus, causing him to rise and exclaim over and over again, “That’s my dad!” The scene rapidly spread across social media as it was revealed for the first time that the adolescent struggles with ADHD, a nonverbal learning disorder, and an anxiety disorder.
Later, Coulter posted on social media, making fun of Gus’ emotional response and tweeted, “That’s really strange.” Navarro reposted a screenshot of the tweet with the comment, “Goodness gracious. What insensitive individuals. It’s appalling to see Republicans and Trump supporters on social media criticizing Gus Walz. It takes a cold-hearted monster to mock a 17-year-old special needs child who isn’t even politically active, just for expressing his affection towards his father.”

She clarified that Gus has neurodiversity, noting that some children with disorders might find it challenging to manage their feelings in social situations. In closing, a host from ‘The View’ stated, “I have no intention of criticizing Barron Trump, considering him off-limits.” The host then expressed their sentiment, “Gus Walz deserves respect and privacy.”
As someone enthusiastic about the discourse, when folks noted that a particular post was absent from Coulter’s former Twitter account, the conservative commentator shared that she removed it promptly upon learning he was autistic. However, she emphasized that it’s Democrats who tend to label others as peculiar, finding amusement in it, which they apparently find amusing.
