As a film enthusiast with a penchant for cult classics and a soft spot for campy B-movies, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news of Paul Rudd and Jack Black teaming up for the reboot of the iconic 1997 movie, Anaconda. With their comedic prowess, I am confident that this new version will be a roaring success, much like the titular serpent itself.
In an exciting collaboration, Paul Rudd and Jack Black are joining forces for a modern take on the 1997 cult favorite film, “Anaconda”, produced by Sony Pictures. To unveil the film’s release date, these comedic powerhouses have created a side-splitting video (available below). In their amusing skit, Black teases, “Prepare for a massive serpent, and it’s going to cause quite a stir.” With these two comedy icons on board, the anticipation is high that audiences will flock to cinemas when the movie premieres on Christmas Day 2025.
Information about the project is scarce, as it was initially unveiled in August 2024. With Rudd and Black on board, it’s evident that Sony Pictures aims to steer the Anaconda series towards a more deliberately humorous direction. There are rumors that the movie will be a self-referential exploration of the B-movie genre featuring giant animals, particularly the original, and will follow a storyline about two former friends who find themselves in the jungle producing a film, but instead end up caught up in a web of criminal activity and the titular snake.
In the upcoming movie, tentatively named “The Anaconda“, is penned by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, with Gormican set to direct. This creative pairing was responsible for the 2022 meta action comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent“, where Nicholas Cage depicted a fictionalized self amidst a predicament involving a die-hard fan and a CIA agent. The film also featured Pedro Pascal, Tiffany Haddish, and Neil Patrick Harris.
‘Anaconda’ Is Ripe for a Meta Horror Comedy Parody
The movie titled “Anaconda,” directed by Luis Llosa from a screenplay penned by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps Jr., features Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, Eric Stoltz, and Danny Trejo. It centers around a movie crew in the Amazon rainforest whose boat is seized by a Captain Ahab-like character (portrayed by Voight as a South American man) who is fixated on catching an enormous anaconda. The exaggerated accent and performance of Jon Voight in this role are so theatrically overblown that they must be witnessed to truly appreciate them.
The movie received negative reviews when it first came out, but Roger Ebert, a renowned film critic, had some positive comments, describing it as “a polished, spooky, humorous Creature Feature, expertly filmed and powerfully acted in the style of high adventure.” Despite its unintentionally funny moments, poor CGI, and Voight’s questionable performance, Anaconda has evolved into a cult favorite, making it an ideal candidate for a meta comedy spoof.
As a cinephile, I must confess that the original “Anaconda” film has given birth to an intriguing brood. The offspring include “Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid” (2004), “Anaconda 3: Offspring” (2008), and “Anacondas 4: Trail of Blood” (2009). In a fascinating twist, “Lake Placid vs. Anaconda” (2015) placed our titanic serpent in a battle royale against the colossal crocodile from the “Lake Placid” franchise. Interestingly, only “The Hunt for the Blood Orchid” graced the silver screen.
