As a globetrotting gamer who’s seen more virtual worlds than I can count, this anaiis and Grupo Cosmo EP feels like a breath of fresh air. Born and bred in the Bay Area, schooled in NYC, and currently residing in London, this French-Senegalese artist has managed to tap into a global vein of inspiration that resonates deeply.
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, educated in New York City and now residing in London, the multi-cultural artist anaiis takes inspiration from a diverse, boundary-less wellspring when crafting her art. Her most recent work, the anaiis and Grupo Cosmo EP, is heavily influenced by Brazil and Venezuela, showcasing a lively fusion of rock, bossa nova, and ’70s psychedelia.
In partnership with Venezuelan quartet Grupo Cosmo, Brazilian artists Sessa and Luedji, this project delves into diverse topics such as Black identity, the splendor of nature, and motherhood. As Anaaiis explains, the essence of this collaboration was encapsulated by being physically present and working in a traditional, non-digital manner. “We spent days on the beach, exchanging meals and tales while creating together,” she shares. “Each track was recorded live onto tape, with no computers involved, and at the end of a week, we had an album that truly reflected the spirit of the moment.
Honeydew,” the main track and debut single, delves into the realities of motherhood, while “B.P.E” pays tribute to global freedom struggles and Black identity. On their album “anaiis and Grupo Cosmo“, listeners embark on an emotionally stirring journey, skillfully directed by anaiis’ soft yet potent influence.
For the debut of her project, Anaiis produced a video for “B.P.E.” using analog film, similar to the EP itself. She aimed to use this medium to showcase the timeless and iconic manner in which traditions and culture are inherited, while simultaneously inspiring viewers with joy. The song is a tribute to Blackness, and she felt it was crucial for the video to convey the strength of our collective spirit through its imagery.
