'Andor' Reveals First Look at 'Rogue One' Star Ben Mendelsohn's Villainous Return in Season 2

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has watched the saga unfold since its inception, I must say that the upcoming Season 2 of Andor is truly exciting news! The return of Orson Krennic, played by the brilliant Ben Mendelsohn, promises to add an extra layer of intrigue and suspense to the story. His character, while not a Sith Lord or bounty hunter, has become a fan-favorite villain in the franchise, thanks to Mendelsohn’s captivating performance in Rogue One.

In the second season of Andor, the narrative will loop back to connect with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, thereby welcoming back Orson Krennic, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn. Introduced in Rogue One, Krennic is a significant figure within the Galactic Empire, serving as the Director of Advanced Weapons Research and responsible for The Death Star’s development. Critics and fans alike lauded Mendelsohn’s performance in Rogue One, making Krennic one of the beloved villains in the Star Wars franchise, despite not being a Sith Lord or a bounty hunter. Nine years later, he reprises his role as Krennic in Andor season 2.

Empire Magazine shared the initial glimpse of Ben Mendelsohn reprising his role as Orson Krennic in Andor Season 2, sporting his pristine Imperial uniform. Mendelsohn hinted that one of his significant adversaries in Andor Season 2 would be an Imperial officer named Dedra Meero (portrayed by Denise Gough). Mendelsohn jokingly commented, “If they didn’t agree, to me, it’s adorable. Dedra versus Krennic? I think it’s a bit of a mismatch. They’re all subordinates to Krennic.

In addition to Mendelsohn, another actor from the movie “Rogue One” is coming back for “Andor”. This is Alan Tudyk, who will once again play K-2SO, the reprogrammed Imperial Security droid that fought alongside Casian in “Rogue One”. At this point, there’s no news about any other characters from “Rogue One”, such as Bodhi Rook (played by Riz Ahmed) or Galen (portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, the father of Jyn Erso and a key figure in the Death Star’s operation). The second season of “Andor” will be divided into sections, each moving the story forward one year. The final part of the season is set to take place just a few days before “Rogue One”.

Andor Season 2 Can Complete One of Star Wars’ Most Successful Stories

Fans are thrilled to have Mendelsohn back in the Star Wars universe, but it’s not a brand-new appearance for either him or his character, Krennic. In fact, Krennic was heard in the penultimate episode of Season 1, titled “The Summit,” where he shared details about the Death Star’s construction with fellow Imperial officers. Krennic was frequently referenced during the Star Wars: Rebels series, but creator Dave Filoni chose not to include him to prevent any potential conflicts with the films. However, a moment between Krennic and Vice Admiral Thrawn did appear in the 2019 novel, Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason, just before the events of the Star Wars: Rebels series finale. With Andor on the horizon, fans hoping for more of Krennic may get their wish.

In 2025, on April 22, Season 2 of “Andor” will premiere on Disney+, marking it as the sole “Star Wars” series set to launch on the platform next year. Production for “Star Wars” TV series is being scaled back by Disney, with a renewed emphasis on feature films. A plethora of new titles are in development. Since its initial release, “Andor” Season 2 will have been nearly nine years since the theatrical debut of “Rogue One”. It’s intriguing to witness the evolution of the franchise since then and how they’ve managed to revive characters from “Rogue One”, even though they were originally written off, making them significant contributors to the broader “Star Wars” universe.
