Viewers may have hoped for a deeper exploration of the establishment of the first, legendary base of the Rebel Alliance on Yavin 4 in Andor season 2, but showrunner Tony Gilroy offers insight as to why this wasn’t fully realized. The timeline for Andor season 2 was expansive, encompassing a four-year period leading up to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while also depicting various phases in the development of the Rebellion and delving into the character progressions of its key players.

After the time leap following the end of episode 6 in the series Andor, Yavin is depicted as already operational without any indication of when it began attracting crowds. In an interview with Backstory Magazine, director Tony Gilroy mentions that they had initially planned to delve deeper into Yavin and the emergence of a structured army there. However, due to time constraints, they made the best use of their resources and Gilroy feels no regret about what wasn’t portrayed in the series. Read his thoughts below:

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel there might have been a tad more growth and exploration in the early stages of Yavin’s narrative. It’s captivating, no doubt, yet it seems slightly underexplored compared to its potential. Each scene we witness is like a snapshot, hinting at progression, revealing how things have evolved. You skillfully utilize every moment, such as when Wilmon appears or the sudden need for medical check-ups and intake officers, even Vel’s brief appearances. Given the limited space, you maximize every opportunity. However, I can’t help but imagine there could be more depth added to this intriguing storyline without losing its essence.

Gilory was also inquired if he ever contemplated depicting the communications between the leadership on Yavin and the ousted rebel cell leader Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård). However, he didn’t have a way to connect with them, partly because of canon constraints regarding Yavin. Here are his additional remarks:

Yavin genuinely unsettles me, if you’re curious. There are aspects of Yavin that make me feel uneasy, and certain logical inconsistencies within Star Wars lore also give me pause. To elaborate, the security at Yavin is a source of anxiety for me, as well as the fact that some individuals seem to be aware of it yet the Imperial Security Bureau remains oblivious. Additionally, there are areas where I prefer not to probe too deeply for fear of stirring up trouble and potentially exposing sensitive information.
