As a fan who appreciates the power of cinema to inspire and move us, I can confidently say that André Holland is a true testament to this art form. His life experiences have undeniably shaped his performances, making each role he takes on deeply impactful and authentic.
Occasionally, a film production manages to seize the essence of lightning in a jar, with everyone involved giving their all. It’s the 10th anniversary of Ava DuVernay’s Academy Award-winning movie Selma, which undeniably falls into this category. We recently chatted with André Holland about his character, a tormented artist, in the latest release, Exhibiting Forgiveness. This is an outstanding accomplishment from writer-director Titus Kaphar, who is also a renowned painter worldwide, and Holland has quite a history with groundbreaking films.
Holland shared with MovieWeb that he hadn’t realized at the time just how significant… the role would become. He explained that he knew it was an essential story, but the full impact wasn’t clear to him. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, the Civil Rights Movement and its history were ever-present in his life. Andrew Young, whom he portrays, has a personal connection for Holland as his mother had worked with Young during her younger years in the movement. Therefore, being part of this project felt incredibly important to him.
Holland continued, reflecting on the film’s lasting impact on his Hollywood career:
Following our work on that film, it led to numerous outcomes, such as my ongoing partnership and friendship with Ava DuVernay, a truly remarkable woman. Common and I have managed to remain close friends… We formed an incredible team, and we’ve all kept in touch, offering mutual support. The movie left a deep impression, but perhaps even more impactful was the way it brought us together – helping and supporting each other throughout our journey.
Exhibiting Forgiveness Cast: ‘Stacked Killers’
Over the past ten years, Holland has remained a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, spearheading numerous outstanding series, including Steven Soderbergh’s masterwork “The Knick” and the critically acclaimed series “The Big Cigar.” Additionally, he’s been involved with films such as “Moonlight,” “High Flying Bird,” and many others. Currently, Holland is at the helm of the newly released production “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” directed by writer-director Titus Kaphar.
Holland shared that when they read it, it was evidently a deeply personal relationship for Titus, one that had been carefully planned and deliberated. Essentially, their task was mainly to approach it with sincerity and authenticity, and be truthful in their actions. Adding to this incredible experience were the remarkable actors John [Earl Jelks] and [Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor], a cast that could be described as a formidable lineup of talented individuals.
In his latest movie, the role of Holland’s wife is played by acclaimed singer and Golden Globe-winning actress Andra Day (from “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”). Holland praises her, saying, “She’s exceptionally talented at everything she takes on. It’s almost not fair that she can be such a fantastic singer, actor… and an exceptional individual.” He spoke these words with a smile.
She is incredibly supportive of everyone, always cheering from behind the scenes even when she’s not directly involved. It’s truly amazing to work with someone like her who is both remarkably kind and immensely gifted. In fact, it feels like working with a dream collaboration.
