Andrew Barth Feldman to Star in Broadway’s ‘Maybe Happy Ending’

Andrew Barth Feldman steps in for Darren Criss in the Tony Award-winning musical “Perhaps a Happy Ending”.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be stepping into the role of Oliver starting September 2, for a nine-week run up until November 1! You might remember me from my Broadway performance in “Dear Evan Hansen” and the film “No Hard Feelings,” but this time, I’ll be taking on the role that made Ben Platt’s name shine – Oliver. This character is a retired robot living in South Korea, which he originated on Broadway and won a Tony Award for his portrayal. Interestingly, he was the first Asian American actor to win best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical with this role. Ben has been playing Oliver since October 2024. I can’t wait to bring my own interpretation to this iconic character!

In this production, Feldman will perform alongside Helen J. Shen, his partner, as well as original cast members Dez Duron and Marcus Choi. Additionally, Steven Huynh, Hannah Kevitt, Daniel May, Christopher James Tamayo, and Claire Kwon, who are understudies, will also be part of the show. Notably, this musical originated in South Korea, and if successful, Feldman would be the first white actor to play the role.

We were captivated by Andrew’s portrayal of Oliver during Helen J Shen’s first audition tape, so having him perform alongside her at the Belasco is truly a delightful surprise. We believe that the audience will share our enthusiasm for this pairing just as much as we do. At its heart, ‘Maybe Happy Ending‘ explores universal themes of longing for connection and the intricacies of being human (and Helperbot, and Vegetable). As creators Will Aronson and Hue Park, along with director Michael Arden, we are committed to presenting diverse casting options and embracing a wide array of interpretations and personal experiences.

In this play, we follow Oliver and Claire, who are portrayed by Shen as a pair of robots seeking connection during their retirement years. This production was honored with the 2025 Tony Award for Best Musical, along with five additional awards: Best Score, Best Book, Best Director of a Musical, and the Tony for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Criss).

Feldman expressed, “I’m absolutely smitten with this show and Helen J Shen. From the very start, I’ve been a fortunate companion on this Broadway adventure. This incredible team and captivating cast have already woven themselves deeply into my life. It’s an immense privilege to be entrusted with this role, and even more so to have the unbelievable opportunity to share it with Helen – a gift that words can hardly express.
